Hey!

I have a big interest in history and I really enjoy when in manga or anime there is characters that also are big history nerds. I was wondering if anyone knew of mangas or animes that had a focus upon history nerd characters, for example a manga or anime about a history club, or had characters in the background that like history, for example the reki-jo team in Girls und Panzer.

Now keep in mind I'm not looking for a manga or anime that takes place in an historical setting. I'm looking for a manga or anime that has characters that like and talk about history. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

All of these have a character with a substantial interest in history:

The Ambition of Oda Nobuna : A boy's history knowledge mostly stems from his in-depth knowledge of historical simulation games, but that totally counts. He gets sent back in time, and uses his knowledge to position himself as an important adviser to a warlord.

Valkyria Chronicles : The main character's best friend (and third wheel in the love triangle, in the anime version of the story) is on-leave from University, where he studies history... and this plays an important point in the plot, eventually.

Spice and Wolf : There are several side characters who are amateur historians or who collect and analyze folk-tales--given that the two main characters are trying to discover information on the main girl's past, they are constantly trying to search such people out in their travels.

Maoyu : The Demon Queen constantly cites historical examples and trends to back up her points about political and economic trends... but no one else has any idea what she's talking about.

Love Hina : It's Archaeology / Anthropology more than straight history, and the cultures described are all made up. But the profession--and the character's love for uncovering truths about the past--do play an important role (at least in latter volumes of the manga... skip the anime adaptation, it's not very good.)

As for anime with history clubs... the best I can do is anime/manga with clubs that focus on investigating the history or past of that particular town or school. That includes:

Dusk Maiden of Amnesia (more so the manga than the anime)
Hyouka
Nagi no Asukara

The main character of Myriad Colors Phantom World, a show by KyoAni that's airing this season, seems like a pretty nerdy guy, his house is basically a giant library and the characters even call him a nerd a lot.

You could also watch Princess Jellyfish / Kuragehime, all the girls in that show are each obsessed with something nerdy.
