but I feel like harems are becoming an overused trope in anime/manga. I know they've always kind of been there, but it feels like it's becoming a plot device in more shows. I've seen a few that don't really use them, but for the most part every other anime I watch, or manga I read is about some guy who (for no discernible reason) seems to magnetize every female in visible eye range to him.

I agree. Harems are to anime what bacon is to current food trends.

Stop adding that crap to everything and pretending it's so innovative and good. It might be good in certain ways but spamming it everywhere just makes people sick and tired of it.

It seems to me that harems are actually on the decline lately.

There was a day where if felt like every single comedy slice of life had to be a harem. But that's not really the case any longer. The tropes have become more refined with the increase of more sub genres to the mix and we seem to be getting a much wider variety of series.

I'm not saying that generic harems are dead or dying though. Just that they aren't cornering the market like they used to.

That false. That lot of people don't like it? Sure but the majority? Nope. The reason it keeps being made is because is popular. Maybe you could argue over here not popular. But in Japan is explosively popular. You know what the most cliche thing out there? Monogamy. Yes, I do like and love harems. Do I like Monogamy series? Yes but that has been done to dead. I am sick of it. Rather watch something different.

You know what I find overdone? Most shonen MC. Now if you excuse me. I am going to enjoy my buffet of harems.

I never said the 'majority'. I said a huge amount of people, which is true. So calling my statement false, is itself, false.

Well, bad on my part then. Even so that is true for everything then. My point being that is really popular. People vote with their money. So the thing that makes them money will be keep being made.

I'll assume you're being ironic in saying "This may be a bold, shocking and revolutionary opinion for this group, but..."

But it's just part and parcel of what we normal well-adjusted westerners have to put up with, dealing with neurotic girl-phobic Japanese teens--
Who spent most of their junior/high school life separated from the girls, have not Idea One how to ask them out, and can only express their fantasies through anime series where the heroes are stuck with all the mountains coming to Mohammed, whether they want them or not. (See, that way it skips over the hard part.)

It's either this, incest-fetish, or the "Accidental marriage contract" series for non-consentual-relationship comedies, where our hero is stuck with the girl anyway, which would you rather prefer?

It's not an unpopular opinion and I don't know why you thought it would be. You're not exactly elucidating some bold, nouveau point of view. People have been saying this for years. Harems are alright. The proliferation of them doesn't really bother me at all. As long as I'm entertained, I need nothing more or less from harems.

That's not an unpopular opinion at all. You're pretty much certain to find multiple harem series every season, many of which are as far away from original as you can get. I still find them enjoyable, mind you, but of course they're everywhere. You won't find anyone disputing that.
