I should complain to CR support about it actually...

Not sure why, streams getting better over time isn't magically retroactive or I'd be complaining about Shamanic Princess.

Forgot it was 480p though, may as well darkside it for those fancy blu-rays then move on to the rest.

It's not that it should be better, its that the entire rest of the series, Nise, Neko, Second Season, etc, is available in 1080P here, except Bake which is 480p. And judging by the quality its actually more like 360p. And really it should be better. It's not like its an old series, it was added to the site in 2012, from the bluray release.

Its clearly the Blu-ray release of the series because it contains errors present from the blu-ray:

Notice the fence/car layering issue.

Blurry. As. Fuck.

I mean that's just inexcusable. It's not even anywhere near DVD quality.

The OVAs are usually put together as a long special/movie rather than kept separate.

Excel Saga is pretty original.

There are a lot of shows like that, but they mainly come in the form of parody. Take Baka and Test for example, tons of clichés like big boobed female character, harem, dense male character, but it's also originally scripted because it's parodying those clichés.

Gakkou Gurashi seemed to fit the bill of cliche'd yet original. It wasn't a perfect show by any means, but it kept your attention and that's all a show needs to do for me honestly. Just because a show is exciting and new doesn't at all mean that you're going to enjoy it more than the shows with recognizable plots and cliches. Anymore the writers try to work on character development and it's a tricky balance between making a character that is interesting that the viewer can empathize with and a character with too much going on that you get sick of halfway through the show

I find this hilarious i 'just' finally finished cat planet cuties.. And i'm pretty sure this is what you mean.
Bellow the quoted kind of applies having some space opera elements to it as well.

When it's an obvious anomaly in CR's catalog I'm less inclined to think it's somehow their fault.

I mean I'm sure they didn't go "Hey Aniplex, we want Bake for our catalog. Give us the shitty version." If you want to bop a head bop Aniplex, catalog titles are hard enough to get already CR probably just went with what they had to.

Hell it might even be because it's the blu-ray instead of broadcast version that it's in low quality, that seems like the kind of thing that'd cross the mind of a boardroom person and sound like a good idea to protect their physical sales.

Especially Aniplex, who seem to think blu-ray quality is worth twelve kidneys fifty unborn children and world peace.

Something cliché with an original twist.

One Punch Man, which aired just last season. There's nothing remarkable about what you're looking for, so I have no idea why you think it has never been done before.

OP: "Something comfortably familiar, but original!"
Everyone: "That sounds like my favorite show! You'll love it!"

I honestly didn't expect to see it get to a discussion of -Monogatari series stream quality, though. Congratulations, internet, you've outdone yourself.

In any case, TVTropes pages about subverting tropes, lampshading, etc. might be able to help you.

One question, though: are you looking for parodies of common tropes, more serious twists and subversions, or something else?

This happens every time I see someone ask for recs anymore.

It's almost a game to see which recommendation is the furthest off from whatever the OP said they're looking for.
