I keep hearing that the argument is answer 1, but I don't think its simple like that. I personally believe the actual truth is answer 5, but culturally and for convenience I would choose answer 3.

any animated series created by a Japanese animation company in Japan whose main target audience is the native people living in Japan (i.e. native speakers). some series deviate a bit from this, but for the most part, this seems a pretty straightforward definition. note that a crappy flash animation made in Japan would still qualify as "anime" and anime-looking series like Avatar would not.

ex: animated series made by P.A. Works, J.C. Staff, MADhouse, etc.

I consider things evocative of or based on animation and/or storytelling styles developed in Japan to be 'anime'.

Technically Anime is just the shortened form of the word animation in Japanese so anything animated counts. But when I think of anime the first thing that comes to my mind is Japanese animation.

The problem with this is that it reduces anime to nothing more than a handful of visual features, which are never accurately captured by foreigners anyway.

Anime is a product of Japanese culture, subculture, society, industry, history and language. Its appearance is a result of production limitations, the adaptation of manga, and the idea that animation can be cinematic and can aspire to all of the same things cinema does. It's not realistically possible for foreigners to create anime, and even the most superficial imitation of anime is likely impossible (Koreans might be able to do it).

I'm just blown away by how often people bring this up and not realize how little sense it makes.

As an opinion poll, I cannot give an incorrect answer. I stated my opinion, you are free to state yours.

Well guess what: your opinion is wrong.

RWBY > 3/4 of the other shows this season

You would have to be a real reverse weeaboo to think so.

By definition: not possible.

Nobody but me can define my opinions.

A claim does not trascend criticism just because you call it an opinion. By your logic I could, for example, accuse you of being a pedophile, necrophile, rapist and neo-nazi who has used stolen credit cards to buy CR accounts and then deflect all criticism by saying it's just my opinion. Or I could write a post breaking all CR rules and then evade punishment by saying that it was just my opinion.

The claim that anime is defined as loose visual style or as a collection of well-known tropes is simply wrong, and calling it an opinion doesn't do anything to change that.
