They already were being courted as a legitimate political constituency. Elections in Japan are on a completely different level than they are in the US.

I posted this in the comments section of the CR story:

This is yet another nail in the coffin of the popular Western narrative that everything "otaku" is considered obscene subhuman trash in Japan and completely shunned by normal society.

It was almost instantly buried by downvotes because there are many people in Western anime communities who are pushing an anti-otaku narrative. News like this is bad for their narrative, and if it was up to them CR wouldn't even be allowed to report on it.
