Well, surprisingly, full-immersive virtual reality is not too far from reality, we might have it in our lifetimes considering in only 40 years the video game console evolved from an old Nintendo Color TV-6 to Oculus Rift with Razer Hydra. So, why not make a list on all the benefits we would have once virtual reality is invented, I'll start with the small things, then go up to benefits that are more than just gaming.

1. Games would be way more fun and immersive.
Somehow we find GTA 5 on a flat-screen TV immersive, imagine playing GTA 5 with a device allowing you to be fully immersed in the world. Things like real-life combat skill and so forth would actually give you an edge in a game if you had full-immersion. It would be almost the same as real life!

2. Imagine playing something like Huniepop in full-immersion virtual reality. Hey guys, why bother hitting on girls or even sexually assaulting them if you can just play one of these virtual girlfriend games in full-immersive virtual reality?

3. Fighting sports like fencing and MMA could be done in a virtual world that is being recorded live, allowing for all techniques, even ones which would be lethal in real life, would make sports more entertaining knowing nobody has to practice safety in a virtual world.

4. It could make learning things like Science and History far easier and more fun in schools.
No really, imagine how much more you could learn in school if your teacher could just send you to 1800's USA via virtual reality to learn about the history of the United States (a topic which if you didn't play on virtual reality would be boring as ****)

5. People who suffer extremely debilitating disabilities like locked-in syndrome (which would probably be hell to have to live through) could be offered a chance to live life normally in a virtual world that's perhaps linked to a robot in real life, essentially allowing for them to live life normally via a robot they control in virtual reality.

6. People in military could be trained using virtual reality, by being forced to fight to the death in a virtual world, they learn the skills they would need in a real war.

Could go on forever but I need to do something in 5 minutes so....

I was with you somewhat up to this point. As a combat veteran I can say while it's an attractive idea on the surface a soldier needs to feel the pain of real life training. The bruises, the cuts, and yes in more than one case the broken bones, even the absolute fatigue of pushing past your physical limits.

And furthermore this sort of thing could desensitize a soldier to the concept of death. While I am not advocating a bunch of overly dramatic behavioural types I will not fight beside men and women who think no more of killing a human then they do a bug.

Well, it may improve the driving in GTA. To some degree.

LoZ and other exploration games could potentially be awesome. Mystery and horror games, too.

That said, it's no holy grail. Notably, limitations will entirely be in the hands of game developers. If they can't/won't delve much into it, their games will reflect it. Ranwolf brings up a good point by bringing up a very particular danger. Although many apparently don't suffer notable decline in morality by playing games, we oughtn't tempt the likelihood overmuch, especially given that virtual reality is no replacement for the chaos and intensity of reality.
