I would like to start out with a disclaimer that I’m usually not the guy that posts to forums and such. I just wanted to write this to vent my frustrations and to hear you guy’s opinion.

I’ve been a member of CR for almost two and a half years now. Over the course of my subscription there have been a lot of minor things that have frustrated me and this week’s frustrations has prompted me to write this little rant.

I was first introduced to CR back in 2013 where a friend got me to watch SAO. After the trial period I bought a month to continue the service. My friend quickly gave up since he thought that CR offered to few “good” shows (he meant the popular and big shows). Since we live in Sweden we often have to deal with licensing issues and the infamous words “Sorry, due to licensing limitations, videos are unavailable in your region” or that the series is delayed.

My personal believe when it comes to media in general is that if nobody payed for it and everyone got it for free (through whatever method), that media would quickly die out. Everyone that I know who watch anime is watching it for “free” on the net. To me this is their own prerogative however I have a subscription to CR to show that I want to support localization and production of anime.
(I do want to state that I do watch shows that aren’t available “through other means”)

Now that that’s out of the way we can jump to the frustrations, and the biggest bar none is the web player. Most ads that I hear about CR talk about the crisp and clear quality of the anime streamed, and yes I have to agree with that, when the web player works… The player breaks pretty often if you do anything other than start the video, and as soon as it starts to stutter it will most likely stay like that the rest of the video, or you’ll have to refresh the entire page to get it to work. When it began to stutter I sometimes tried to lower the resolution of the video but I’ve stopped doing that since the 480p and SD resolutions more times than not didn’t work at all. I don’t know if it is the servers or the web players fault but I never had this problem with Youtubes old flash player or the HMTL5 web player.

I’ve tried the CR IPad app and it works amazingly well. I don’t want to use it though since it’s basically only good for that watching not allowing you to rate or interact with the community in any kind of way, which I quite enjoy.

Something that I started to use a few months back on the IPad however is the manga app which must be one of the most underdeveloped apps I’ve ever used. It doesn’t have any categories it doesn’t have a proper notification function. It doesn’t tell you if the series is ongoing or finished neither does it tell you if it is a monthly series, a weekly or when you can expect an update. It feels so last minute that I find it hard to understand that this app hasn’t been developed further in the 2 years that it has been out.

Besides the lack of features I’ve had some performance issues with the app as well, where some pages loaded incredibly slowly. I’ve been reading an excellent manga I can recommend to everyone called “soredemo machi wa mawateiru” it was aggravating to find that the first 50-60 chapters some pages took between 2-3min to load. Just imagine you sitting there trying to read a book but then forced to take a break every 3-6 pages for 2-3min just because it has to load. This is again an issue I believe lies with either the server or app since the weekly chapters that I follow such as “seven deadly sins” and “Yamada and the seven witches” load in an instant. Another minor aggravation that happens from time to time in the app is an error "Request failed: bad request (400)", this one is pretty easily resolved though since I for the most part just have to reload the chapter.

The frustration that I mentioned earlier about this week was actually related to the manga app where I couldn’t read some content because out of nowhere it started to say that I needed to be a premium member to read it. Thanks to that I couldn’t read neither chapter 86 of “soredemo machi wa mawateiru” or the previous chapter and the ones after 86. I tried to log out and log in again to try and resolve this problem, only to find that I couldn’t logout and every time I pressed the logout button there would just be a prompt with the word “Okay”. I had to reinstall the app to be able to log in again, and even then I still can’t read the chapters.

Phew. Those were most of my frustrations. Now you may be wondering why I’m posting this to the forums and not contacting the CR staff for all of this. Well mainly because I don’t think that that will make any difference. Most of the things that I complained about were things that either are deeply integrated in the service that CR provide such as the web player or the things that might be hardware limitations at the servers’ end or lack of support for their subsidiary app (manga app). From what I can see when I look at the news in CR it seems that they instead focus on pumping out more apps for devices that aren’t used as much such as a WII, PS Vita and WIIU app.

I’ve found as time has gone on that I find it harder and harder to justify my membership and I’ve been thinking about maybe find some other way to support the anime industry. If you have read this far into my rant (almost want to call it an opinion piece now), I thank you for enduring my whining.

Now that I write this it's not that I'm angry, maybe a little passionate but most of all just tired about all of this. I’m now asking the community if you guys maybe have had similar experiences and what you feel about this topic.

Am I expecting too much? Do I have too high standards? Should I start finding different means to support anime?
I would like to hear you guy’s opinions and if the staff wants to join in I’m not stopping them.

PS. Big fan of the CR podcast, keep up the good work with that one!

I do think you're expecting a little too much - reason being, the subscription fee is not very large. You get a massive amount of content for your measly few dollars, and provided you have the internet speed to support it, you get excellent quality.

I do think the player is buggy, and I don't really understand why that in particular can't be fixed, though in recent months it has been DRASTICALLY better for me, on Chrome. (which might be due to my newly built PC more than anything CR has done with it.)

I think it's probably fairly important to find other means to support your favorite anime, at the very least - because the trickle-down funds they may get from CR subscriptions is not that big a piece of pie, at least not at this stage in the game. The world is only now catching on to the brilliance that is anime =D

But really, I think the subscription fee is justifiable, if only just so I don't have to buy even more HD space, hehe. It's also nice that the premium membership gives you access to entire (older) series, and once in a while it waves some anime I have not seen / heard of at me, which I likely wouldn't have tried watching without.

I rather just use hulu honestly. It buffers much better, and I could see myself paying $11 just for a better player.

I had the same problem, CR streaming didn't buffer well until I decided to turn off my VPN proxy server, now it works super good!
I think the CR app works as good whether I had VPN turned on or off.

Apart from that, I think that If you want to migrate to another server, you're free to do so. In my case, I have limited choices in where I want to watch anime as Hulu, Funimation is not available in my region, CR is the best only option I have (apart from some Netflix titles). Of course I would love to see more titles here but CR depends highly on premium members and non-premium members who watch the ads, it's up to you, really.

Now this is what you call "free time" omg, that took me ages to read

But anyway the player works between both sides
Server and client side
Or your device could just be slow, whichever could be the issue

Well here's the thing. CR player on my laptop or any PC isn't great at times. I'll get into 13 min into a 1080p episode, and then it will stop playing, and I'll have to refresh. Other times I can get through an episode without any problem. If I watch it on my tablet I have no issues, and it is usually the best way I can watch anime, same with my vita, and the vita has great quality.

I have been enjoying 1080p HQ anime on my new laptop, yeah it's a piss off when it cuts at times, but honestly how can I be upset. I remember when I was using my Sony vaio laptop to watch countless of episodes of anime with relative ease, but on SD because it only had a dual core processor, but then it just couldn't play an actual episode, no matter how many times I refreshed, now this is probably because of all the new updates to flash players chrome, and everything else, for a 2006 laptop, one of the greatest laptops I have ever had.

I have an intel core i7 now, it plays 1080p videos flawlessly, one of the best viewing experiences I have had, I have the luxury to see anime the way it is supposed to be viewed, yea I get some hiccups here and there, but come on man, I have watched hundreds of episodes on CR, as long as I can view an entire episode, then I have no problem. Yeah their play back issues definitely have to be dealt with and fixed.

Yea you can watch anime for free, you can listen to music for free, you can watch movies for free, this is our world. Put it online and it's going to be stolen, people will find a way, they always do. The time where we can purchase something, have it, and always have it for the worth it is, that is long gone. What is value today? It is extortion, what we think of value is nothing anymore. Ease of access is simply that, ease of access to everything, easier for pirating, easier to steal, the easier our lives become, the harder it gets in the long run for everyone. So what we think has value is merely something that is questioned now.

Be thankful you have the option to watch anime here my friend, you forget that if you bite the hand that feeds you, you will learn the hard way. Don't think you are entitled to having an opinion on the matter of frustration. I get frustrated that my video suddenly stops, but I don't say anything because the profit I have earned verses the loss matter more than my frustration. If you can't read manga because you are a free user, well guess what? Use your head and find a way to keep doing it for free, or pay for the ease of access. Sometimes paying for something is ultimately easier and more effective, shocking I know.

Browser version is flawless for me. Of course I don't have shitty Internet or anything running that would conflict with the player either. The console apps are shit though. Mobile works fine for me. It's just too basic.

Nah I agree with you. CR staff is either lazy or useless.
I ask them to fix this grammar issue and what do I get? Nothing at all.

Now you must be think is only been 22 hours. Bloody hell that precisely the problem. Viz media grammar or any manga problem, get fix fast. I know what you must be thinking. Is only one word. Bloodified hell that not the problem. Is them taking their sweet time with it. Last time I reported a problem with one the manga. It took them almost 3 months to fix the damn thing. A manga with multiple pages missing. It got fix right after me going to Facebook to complain about it. And I really hate using facebook.

If you are paying for a service, is it not wrong not to expect better?

There's a bunch of other sites out there who stream for free and they do it flawlessly on the web browser. Web browsing streaming should be an issue CR should focus more since the website is the front page of their business and is the one that generates the most traffic.

Tbh, I've never really had problems with streaming. I've only ever experienced a freeze if I paused the video for longer than 5 minutes and tried playing it again: the stream would freeze at some random point unless I refreshed the page before I started streaming again.

I don't understand how people have varying degrees of issues with players on similar devices. I very very rarely have an issue with CR on my PC, but i also almost exclusively use the Xbox One App. i have NEVER had an issue with it, except when XBL is having issues itself. By comparison my Funimation app wigs out on me all the time on XBOne.

Last night I had to boot up CR and Funi on my PS4 due to an XBL services issue (once again not CR/Funi's fault) And on PS4 I was getting odd video hiccups on both where audio was still playing perfectly, but the video would stutter or buffer from time to time. Hulu has this same thing happen to me on both consoles as well from time to time. And no. it's not my internet. I have Fios Quantum and consistently pull 90+mbps down/up speeds.

Now that I have rambled on though with my own experiences, I also feel that CR is a "small" website and is still growing. I truly enjoy their video player and queue system. My gripe is with how bad the search engine works at times for both shows and forums.

i think im more tolerant of these "issues" because i used to live in a time where... i had to wait one whole day or week to download an anime episode and if somebody called, it was over.

am not sure what ure looking for in this thread? someone to give you reasons why you should pay premium? well here's 1, if u don't want to watch the ads, then stick to premium.

I’ve read all of your posts and it seems really varied in how people experience the web player, apps and service in general.

As a few answers to the statements and clarifications.
I noticed that a lot of posts were from people living in North America and were suggesting other streaming services such as Hulu and Funimation. I pointed out however that I lived in Sweden and don’t have those two alternatives to turn to (don’t want to jump through the hoops to get a subscription there neither do I want to use a VPN).
Another thing that stood out in particular was “Humms” post when he comments about me being a free user. I was a paying user (up until last week) and failed to notice when it expired. This would explain the issue I had in the manga app and was entirely my fault.

When it comes to the licensing issues I don’t really care. I do watch anime elsewhere if I can’t get the content on CR, but when I can get the content here I try to watch it here and it is then when it bothers we when the player doesn’t work since it works flawlessly on other sites that I do watch.

It might have sounded in my previous post that I disliked a lot of things about CR but when it comes to the anime content it mostly is the limited amount of content and the sometimes very annoying web player. What I wanted to get at with the web player part in my rant was that it just doesn’t feel like they spend a lot of resources improving the player which makes me just wish that they would just migrate over to the HTML5 web player.

For now, I’ve decided to renew my subscription and see how they will try to improve CR in the future.

I would like to thank those that posted on my little rant. This topic that I made was for basically for me to whine a little about the things that I’ve experienced these past 2 years but also to read you guy’s response. I really like how this community currently is and hope that it will only become better and better from hereon out.
