Partly because there's tons of different interpretations of the show. And partly because the show is unnecessarily obtuse about everything.

To a lesser extent though there's Durarara x2/ x2 Ten. But this is mostly because the writing is kinda sloppy.

i watched serial experiments lain high and still got it..xDD

You know, a lot of people say NGE, and while I also was confused, I was actually confused for the entirely wrong reason. And that was because I watched the episodes sporadically and inconsistently out of order on late night Adult Swim programming. lol

A couple years later, I watched it all again in order, and shit made so much more sense.

I really can't think of any fair examples for me off the top of my head, sadly.

I think I would need to watch Serial Experiments Lain about a thousand times in order to understand it. Basically, all I really understood was that there was a girl in a bear suit.

I think you more likely got it because you were high.

I think Baccano would be easier to understand the second time.

Going to throw in Serial Experiments Lain as another title as well.

The Monogatari franchise is also a good example imo

I was going to suggest Serial Experiments Lain, but I'm pretty sure Lain actually doesn't mean anything. So it doesn't matter how many times you watch it

I had to watch FLCL twice to "get it". I think because I just missed things the first time when I was watching it on TV.

Boogiepop Phantom is a brilliantly written puzzle series, and the mysteries are challenging to put it lightly.

I'd honestly be amazed if someone managed to work it all out in two viewings. Possible but very tough.

YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND!11!!!1!

I literally don't.

Haven't watched it in about a year though and I've got it on DVD now, should give it a fourth run.

You should read Boogiepop at Dawn. Boogiepop Phantom is the sequel to that book.
I watched the anime first and that made me interested enough to seek out and read the books.

I've never had to watch an anime twice completely to understand it but I've definitely had to rewind some scenes in durarara a couple times

I don't understand what it means to understand an anime. I don't feel the need to watch anything twice unless I enjoyed it the first time through. And I don't watch shows again to gain a more thorough understanding; I do it because I enjoy the show.
