Moments in Entertainment That Make You Uncomfortable.
Posted 2/15/16 , edited 2/15/16
Have you had any moments that made you somewhat uncomfortable? This isn't just an awkward moment, so I'll start with an example. I was watching a kids' show where a girl was told by her parents in public to be the best at everything. It made me uncomfortable because it was essentially legal child abuse. Think of it this way. You're at a nice restaurant, eating your food, when suddenly you witness a father yelling at their crying kid. It's awkward for you, but between the child and father? It's just verbal violence. Essentially, instead of being a private awkward moment between two or more people, leaving everyone but the participant feel awkward. Take for example Watamote. Or how about a Simpson episode where Apu and his wife have 8 kids?

So what moments in entertainment made you uncomfortable?

So I'm was watching this anime about this girl faking everything in her life to become accepted by her bitchy "friends". I hate the fact that people can be actually like this... people that only want to be accepted and doing everything for fitting in.

I hate superficial people.

Basically most of what Family Guy has been doing. There is a lot of subject matters they have been handling poorly and that makes me feel very uncomfortable most of the time.

Basically my problem with Family Guy is Brian's flanderization of Brian to Liberal Douche, but I won't say he's a self insert, because Brain suffered a fair amount to how much of a Douche he is. I'll give Seth credit for that. But the idea of Brian makes me uncomfortable. Now he's so opinionated for a fictional character.

Speaking of which, I get uncomfortable watching South Park. It seems the creators have a hard on against authoritarianism, but now it feels like they're against the left wing as well, and being a liberal myself this just seems....awkward. Like watching a 30 min rant about why Obama is a bad president or something of a similar nature. I prefer well reasoned rants, thank you, not making fun of everyone you hate. Truth be told, I still enjoy South Park.

Borderline explicit sex, or ecchi. I always tense up because I expect someone will walk in on me and I will have to explain why what I am watching is not porn.

At the end of Life, when all the assets are added up, it always makes me feel a little uncomfortable when the value for each child/spouse is addressed.

That whole quest in Fallout 4 were you have to "man up" the radio announcer and it basically is a run down of a pretty regressive idea of what makes a "man".

Honestly I think Brains turn from a cultured liberal to someone pretending to be a cultured liberal whose talking out of his ass made him much funnier.

Yeah, but Sakura didn't know that. That entire episode implied that she would be extremely easy to kidnap.

Watamote is pretty much the anime based on my life.

On that note, most fluffy happy moments of friendship and romance make me feel awkward because I don't have that

two specific moments from season 5 of Game of Thrones

Like I expect Game of Thrones to be dark, but seeing those moments had me actually feel physically repulsed which is rare for me. They were horrifying moments in the extreme and also got me angry at the show for a while, and are the reason I feel season 5 was really lackluster as a whole, besides being based on the two weakest books in the series. It felt to me like the writers just going "see how awful and dark this is. be horrified." I think it's almost like they feel they have a quota to fill after the Red Wedding which kind of grates on me. These moments reeked of a pointless cruelty in writing that I feel is beneath the material. Just shoehorning in more awful things to hammer in the bleakness of the setting. Its one of the reasons I quit the Walking Dead, because I no longer gave a shit what happened to anyone and was sick of the show's persistent hopeless misery. the difference is that Game of Thrones is a much better written show, and so those moments hit like a sucker punch to the gut but afterwards just left me pissed at the show for including them.

We get it Westeros is an awful place to live, you don't have to hammer it in by incessantly banging on the traumatizing cruelty button.

Yeah, haters don't like seeing and being the mirror image of what their belief systems and favorite causes actually are or resonate from. Boo hoo. I don't watch it much but South Park continues to be biting social commentary as I recall from their earlier shows. The 4-show cour that aired recently was a hoot. South Park poked fun at pompous elites that were not composed of the usual suspects: white, 50-somethings, or banker Republicans. Instead it was smug narcissistic foodies, within 20-40 age cohort range, upwardly mobile who despised law enforcement to the point of banishment until a certain inconvenient truth befell them: homeless people occupying their turf at night. It is interesting how some philosophies shift to the right as they get older or have to face consequences for their irrational beliefs.

Yea, South Park. Keep it up.
