No offense PV but while agree with your statement, I dare you make a transgender joke or a trap joke about a real person and not get banned/reprimanded. Regardless of context.

I've made worst jokes and not get banned. Remember when I compared orgasms to Hiroshima? Ah, those were the days.

It's particularly bad, to be honest. I haven't been on a forum in years where the majority of the threads are people asking inane questions like "what if god isn't real" or "what is your favorite x" a million times in a row for clickbait, and people still bother responding.

I mean, I don't really use this forum much, so that's fine by me - but I'm wondering if there is a particular reason other than a dedicated community of trolls for these kinds of threads that are obviously meant to just incite pointless arguments over equally pointless things.

I've seen people try to argue about feminism by baiting threads, religion by baiting threads, racism by baiting threads, any of a number of things really that normally would get you banned or otherwise warned on a normal well-moderated forum. Since bringing real-life concerns into an internet forum tend to just cause people to endlessly argue without any fruitful dialogue occurring, and I have yet to see much of said dialogue.

Maybe I'm the only one who finds it odd. Regardless, it doesn't matter much, but when the sidebar for the forum is a list of thread names that are primarily bait by trolls it really makes me wish I could just hide that display.

Oh I can troll those? No doll that's not trolling. This is CR remember, the place where negativism is met with isolation. No there's no trolling here so count yourself lucky. A shame though since I am a master troll.

This forum is practically bipolar. Its farking surreal to look at topics about everyone's favourite cookies alongside topics cheering on neo nazis and shit.

I mean cripes, this is an anime streaming site. What the hell is going on around here? >.>

You. But getting a warning or your comment removed is a Dick move by the mods. When is a joke or a compliment in the case of trap jokes. Regardless I don't care. I don't make jokes about transgender people, traps jokes in the other hand I do but is either about anime character or when involved real people, is meant has a complement or just a joke. In the case of real people, I do it outside the site.

I believe a lot of it stems from extended discussion getting merged with General. That's about the time the political threads started showing up. It's made it abundantly clear to me that our community is not meant to be discussing complicated social and political issues. except for Blue Oni who consistently makes well thought out and supported posts on those threads, I don't think any of us, myself included, have the combination of intelligence, patience, knowledge base, and tact to be discussing them.

I mean a forum that houses threads about the ethics of genetically engineering catgirls might not be up to tackling complex foreign policy issues. Just saying.

You mean this one?

http://www.crunchyroll.com/forumtopic-876231/should-we-genetically-engineer-catgirls

Frankly, if peeps on an anime site can't even articulate their position on the bioethics of genetically engineered catgirls, maybe one would be doubtful of their ability to offer a cogent argument in other areas?

Yeah that's definitely one of the root causes for the current state of affairs. I was a beta tester for the forum changes over a year ago and I did let Baker know that this issue would probably arise, and that it would require the mods to be WAY WAY more proactive if we were to have peaceful forums.

But what happened was that the flood gates were opened, and the fringe minority from extended discussion immediately took over GD. Then other people decided to join the bandwagon since it apparently became open season in the forums. And things just snowballed from there.

It also definitely hasn't helped that the toxicity levels for the internet in general have also been on the rise at pretty much the same time. So then on top of all the garbage coming in from the old ED forums, it suddently became in vogue to make threads here linking every single clickbait piece of garbage news that people find. The more offensive and divisive the better.

----

At the end of the day, it is what it is. If General Discussion annoys me it's easy enough to ignore it. But I guess the only thing that really bugs me is that it sometimes feels like the forums are being held hostage by an extreme minority. That's why I made my initial comment stating that if a few people were to just have posting rights revoked, almost all the garbage here would immediately clear up.

It's just annoying to me that in a community of thousands, a handful of trouble makers are able to suck all the oxygen out of these forums on a daily basis. And since they so effectively toe the line with the rules, and try to play on moderators feelings for open communication there really is just no end to it in sight.

Wait, so CR points are given from forum posts?

I suppose that would encourage people to post whatever topic they feel will attract large numbers of viewers, regardless of merit or anything else behind the creation of a topic.

I mean, I'm not saying that topics have to have a real point or be too meaningful - but sometimes you just come across threads that are obviously bait.

Thanks for the responses everyone, this was something I really was curious about since I started posting here. Not that I've posted much, as I believe I said.

My safe space has a moat. Possibly an alligator. I'm not 100% sure. I don't really go out there much so there could be anything in there really. I suppose I should at least swing by once and a while and add some chlorine. Chase the raccoons out. Maybe do a bit of yard work.
