Ah the General Discussion forum...

It's a bit harsh to call them all troll threads, but my God... I look at half of these threads and immediately go "Nope!"

Some people just love upping their points even though it doesn't do or mean anything. As such, we get useless threads and spam posts that contribute nothing to the thread and the sub-forum. I've seen countless instances where users post 1-2 word comments that don't contribute anything to discussion and serve only to boost post count (ex. "that's hot"). I usually just mark them all as spam and move on.

It's not automatically bait simply because the topic is feminism or religion or racism. It depends how people respond. Lots of flaming turns those threads into a whirlwind of crap but the initial post is almost never the one to blame.

Depends on the wording in the post as well. If the thread is like "Are You Feminist and Why?" or "What is Your View on Abortion?" I would not consider those trolly or baity unless there are already similar existing threads.

On the other hand, if the thread is "What if Women are Inferior to Men?" or "What if God is Imaginary?" then those would be sort of asking for flames.

I've been wondering about that. How many benefits are tied to post count? It often feels that people go on a forum without an interest in discussing anything or socializing, which seems a bit strange. There's a deluge of threads that elicit one word responses; I thought it was an ego thing, people seem to like giving their two cents.

I personally despise those threads. You post once and then you're done. I prefer ones where you can...you know, actually have a discussion. That's just me, though.

You're certainly not alone. I thought I was, to be honest. I started browsing about this forum on slow nights, but haven't had much success in finding interesting conversation.

There aren't any real benefits other than the satisfaction of bragging about your post/CR point count; but yeah, there's a ton of threads that don't provide discussion worthy content and a ton of users spamming few word responses that don't add anything to the thread.

People like making controversial or troll posts because the funny thing is, people on CR tend to lose their minds if they see someone disagree with them. It can be incredibly entertaining scrolling through arguments between people; especially if they attempt to start off as an actual debate but gradually escalate into "you're so stupid! your existence offends me! I wish everyone like you would die!"

it's all for the CR points

Exactly right. KIll boredom post spam get points.

There used to be section in CR titled Extended Discussion. Over there a person could find expanded general discussions that actually were well-intentioned, reasoned, well thought out. It used to generate a lot of constructive dialogue. Unless I don't know where to look for it anymore I think it's been dropped.

Just thought I'd say that this was the first post in GD that I've had any interest in reading for months. Most of the time just reading the topics irritates me.
