I used the Random button and hit Kids on the Slope. I had no idea what it was. If you want a funny, witty, charming slice of life / music story, I can highly recommend it. The detail in the anime timing is fantastic, just watch the jazz drumming.
Jazz so cool it's subzero

A lot of ground about 1 of the main characters gets covered just before the final credit run on the last episode. Looking back living the '60's as a kid wasn't that great but watching this series, knowing what I know today, makes me long for reliving part of that era over again.

v you can either listen up front via Amazon or buy the OST. It's mainly past jazz tunes played by some of the Greats. I was a little disappointed with the OST though. I guess I was expecting a release as fantastic as the Cowboy Bebop Yoko Kanno number selections. That joy didn't happen when I finished listening to the Kids on the Slope medleys.

I'm reading the manga currently (about 70% of the way through), and I'm loving it so far. The only thing is that I can't actually hear any of the music as I read it. Is the music well-done in the anime? If so, I may switch over.

Yup I love those kinds of anime. Where there's not much fanservice or any other bs to give entertainment.

You should check out Flowers of evil, too. It's less popular than kids on the slope and has very bad reviews, but it's like my fav anime of all time.

I started watching it for the Jazz music, stayed for the likable characters, not too deep yet entertaining story and the Jazz music.
I'm happy to have this little gem in my blu ray collection.

Flowers of Evil........excellent choice. I don't understand the bad reviews. Every kid wants to be special, unique rather than languish in the sea of conformity and lameness. How the male protagonist handles the non-conformist tests whether that belief system should be maintained or discarded is reviewed in the anime. I think the manga is still ongoing. I would like to see a 2nd season of Flowers of Evil if the manga ever progresses far enough to justify it (same for Watamote).

v You're right. Flowers of Evil sales were abysmal. I think the guys over on ANNCast talked about those numbers. Too bad.

The manga is finished.
From the previews at the end of the anime, they seem to have had plans for a season 2, but I think the failure to sell copies prevented that from happening?

This is one series where I can honestly say, the anime is heaps better than the manga, I would have loved to see how the anime would approach the second part of the series.

I've seen that anime 2 years ago
It's one of my favourite anime

That anime is one of my favourites. I wish more people have seen it, but I always try and recommend it when I can. It's definitely a good experience.

I always felt like this anime was a diamond in the rough.

Now, to comment about the manga. I too personally feal the anime is much more enjoyable. Being able to really hear the music adds so much more emotion to the scenes.

But....I feel after you watch the anime you should go back and read the manga from 10 or so chapters back from where the anime ended. There is a lot more with his mother in the manga that I wish was put in the anime. Also the manga ending is very satisfying if you are a helpless sucker for romantic endings like me.

The music makes the show for me. While I love all of the other bits, the big medley performance in the anime is one of my favorite anime moments ever. Its just so powerful and well played. Yoko Kanno is in absolute top form throughout.

I think its portrayal of American jazz and blues music was pretty spot on. It isn't just rock n roll that's loved all over the world. Also the last episode had one of the best endings of any slice of life anime.

This is just an amazing show. What I particularly like about this show is that the two contrasting styles of music fit the two MCs like a glove, and that is used to tell a story. If you like this show so much, then check out Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju as the two MCs in that show remind me so much of Kaoru and Sentaro so much seeing that two people with very different styles came to be great buddies.

Wow, I didn't realize there was a Kids on the Slope manga. I'm definitely gonna have to check that out. I loved the anime, one of the first I watched on crunchyroll actually. I still watch the performance of "But Not for Me" pretty often when the mood hits. I've heard Sound! Euphonium is kind of similar and I've been meaning to check that out as well.
