Let me know if a thread like this one exist or not.
Thanks a bunches.

I was just wondering if it is possible to make a cliché idea an original idea. Pretty much you take a cliché and try to add some originality to it. Can it be done?

Enjoy!!!

Can it even be considered cliche in the first place if it's original?

Probably not. But what I mean is put an original twist on the cliché idea.

Yeah, like Konosuba. Its basic idea is pretty cliche, living in a game world, but it goes about it in a new way.

Also, Madoka Magica starts out like most magical girl animes, then it goes in a totally different direction.

I believe so. but I have no idea how.

like the concept of disappearing into another dimension is pretty clichéd in terms of anime plot. but I think it's doable if that alternate universe is unique like it's not just a mirror of our world but just with different language or timeline, it's like completely unique... it all depends on creative the writer is. to make an entirely new universe that's not based on our world is quite difficult.

Easily. Just make it realistic.

Fantasy world? Make it realistic, shit in the streets, disease, no water etc.
Stuck in a game? Make it realistic, they feel pain, they bleed, same stuff as above.
Have a tsundere? Make it realistic. 99% of people irl will ignore a tsundere. Too damn annoying.
Knight in Shining Armor? Make it realistic. Social status will make it impossible unless you are a royal. Happy couples can die young to disease/birth, concubines, harem, etc.

A lot you can do by just making something realistic.

Most original ideas are twists on cliches. They combine cliches to make something new, or they use cliches as a base and then build upon them in an unexpected way, or they take the cliche and do the opposite. I don't believe something can even be a "twist" if it's not playing on your expectations, but you wouldn't have expectations if the premise or scenario wasn't familiar.

For example, the cliche is that the hero defeats the villain at the end. That's your expectation. So the only way for there to be a twist on that cliche is to have the hero lose, die, fail, etc. Otherwise the cliche would just play out the same as always. But cliches can be a good thing, because endings like that could be really unsatisfying.

For another example, the main suspect in mysteries and cop dramas is never the actual culprit. But that's a good thing. If the suspect the writer wanted you to think did it actually did it, then there's no mystery. The detective or whoever just figured it out right away. At that point the story would become about finding evidence, which would probably get boring.

The fun is in trying to figure out or guess which of the other 4 or 5 suspects is guilty. You see this cliche all the time because it works to create the suspense and uncertainty you want as a writer. There's no twist if you know who did it, so that rules the main suspect out, see? If it was who you thought it was all along, it'd be boring and obvious, and the reveal of "whodunnit" wouldn't be shocking or satisfying.

So it's not automatically good to go against cliche, but twists only come from going against your expectations.
So it's a balancing act.

-__- or when people try to be "original" and just fail flat on their face... sometimes its better to go a more "normal" route while doing your own thing (special "traits", things you like to do or show and etc)

Konosuba, is one of funniest "stuck in game" things I've seen. It's a cliché show done good.
