That depends on what you mean by "original"

Like, how different do you want the new idea to be?

I should point out that if putting new spins on old ideas didn't work, we wouldn't have around 90% of the top anime that we have today.

In those cases, they weren't mysteries. The payoff was in seeing Colombo dupe the slimy criminal. Phoenix Wright is another good example of the audience knowing who did it, but struggling to actually pin the crime on them -- but that's not mystery. That's cat-and-mouse, like Death Note.

"Evidence Hunt" or "Cat-and-mouse" stories are usually best when they're police/military/spy action or suspense thrillers, because once the mystery is over and you know "whodunnit," the hero's quest to capture him/her must be perilous and dangerous enough that audience actually cares.

James Bond, and almost every martial arts movie, for example. The fun is in watching the hero fight, trick, and race the bad guys, not in the mystery of who may be guilty. There's a bomb or a nuke, or there's a revenge plot, or there's a good chance the villain will kill again if he isn't caught now, or whatever.

Jessica Jones is yet another great example. You know full well who the villain is. It may be a detective story, but it's the action and suspense that makes an episode good, not the mystery. Mystery has nothing to do with it. Cop dramas do switch gears and have action/suspense episodes, but in almost every mystery/whodunnit episode, the main suspect is not the culprit. If he/she is the culprit, then the episode becomes more about chases, traps, and death threats and stuff.

Not only is that possible, it's often expected. Carbon copying what has come before is a common complaint among anime fans when examining character tropes, and the complaint ultimately comes down to failure to meet the expectation that a particular trope be presented or explored from alternative angles or be taken in alternative directions. Now, that doesn't mean the wheel necessarily has to be reinvented every time. It's fine to present a tsundere in a way that people have come to love them being presented. It only really becomes a problem when tsundere are presented a particular way pervasively.

So how much do you change, and how much do you leave the same? An illustration might help resolve the dilemma, and video games offer a really nice example of contrast. I think the question has been deftly handled by Nintendo with the Super Mario titles and poorly handled by Sega with the Sonic the Hedgehog titles. Nintendo kept the elements people loved about Super Mario games while changing or adding other things to maintain a sense of freshness. Sega, meanwhile, took away the things that people loved about Sonic The Hedgehog games and tried to change the whole package again and again, much to everyone's frustration.
