Japan’s record on women’s rights to face review by UN Committee

GENEVA (10 February 2016) – Japan’s record on women’s rights will be examined by the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) on 16 February. Japan has ratified the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women and so is reviewed regularly by the Committee on how it is implementing the Convention.

Among the possible issues for discussion between CEDAW and a delegation from the Japanese Government are: Banning the sale of video games or cartoons involving sexual violence against women; employment equality, illegal dismissal of women due to pregnancy and childbirth; sexual harassment in the workplace; reintegration into school textbooks of issue of “comfort women”; compensation for women with disabilities sterilised against their will; effect on women, particularly pregnant women, of health programmes introduced after the Fukushima nuclear disaster; difference in pension benefits for men and women, poverty among older women.

That hardly includes all hentai and eroge, unless I've missed other parts of this.

Of course, I don't think that even the small section of media they've set about reviewing should be banned. In the end, it is fictional and nobody is harmed, and as I've pointed out, the availability of pornography has an inverse relationship with incidents of sexual offenses. The trend holds true overall, but it is most important to keep in mind for forms of pornography that many find distasteful - like those that depict rape or content involving minors.

In the end, I hope (and doubt) that such a thing would be banned.

What if illegal?

I'm sorry, but I don't get what you're asking. Can you clarify please? It isn't illegal, but I was wondering why you did it.... :/

I ask that because you sound like I did something bad.
Then why are you asking me for that? You ask as if I committed some deep moral sin.
Why did I do it? Easy because those are my same exact thoughts.

I feel like you're overreacting just a little, but I'll drop it. I was just wondering, that's all...

Ummmmm You're using a female in your profile picture when you clearly state you are male. That's clearly sexist and discriminatory towards women as you see them as nothing more than placeholders of empty slots. You think it's okay to put pics of girls on your profile when you aren't a girl? Misogynistic pig!

Excuse me? I'll have you know I'm a cis-gendered, half-white male, and by my rights of white supremacy and white privilege, I say that I deserve to have whatever image that I feel like to represent me, represent me, even if it is the image of such a lowly being like a WOMAN.

Oh, you're half white? That means you're also half minority. That means you're half oppressed by systematic oppression and thus you are exempt from being eligible of being racist. Racism only affects those who don't have power. It's discrimination + power!

If they banned Eroge and Hentai then they would have to also ban any type of porn in general.

except the article you posted clearly said "Banning the sale of video games or cartoons involving sexual violence against women;" sounds like they just have issues with the more rapey titles, not porn in general

They conspicuously left out violence against men... so I guess homo-erotic rape is a go? Clearly, the people who drafted the proposal haven't consulted with many psychotherapists if any at all regarding comics and cartoons. They see the problem of violence and sexual abuse but don't know the cause, so they start carpet bombing metaphoricallly.

The UN needs these kinds of dog and pony shows to they justify their existence.

Absolutely fucking atrocious and ridiculous. This shows that are world is slowly spiraling down into a pit of thought crimes and padded safe spaces.

If you dont like something, dont watch it, dont read it...simply avoid it. There is a new sickness in the world and its trying to find a problem where there shouldn't be one. I am sure, somewhere, it does offend someone, and you know what? who cares. Everything offends someone.

Why is it that in this age, all of a sudden; the response to anything provocative is to ban it and hide it? Is the world really this thin skinned? Is Hentai really the cause of the worlds problems? Is it really the one of the "big" issues that needs to be "Dealt" with? The U.N does jack shit for anybody except for a few political movements in the interest of its allied nations which tend to be less that beneficial for anyone involved that isn't a benefiting party.

On the contrary, this atrocious act of thought policing and thought censorship would hinder artistic development and lead down a road which we will not be able to back track down. A road that leads to censorship of anything that the mainstream liberal progressive millennial hive mind finds "problematic".

What about femdom doujins? there are alot of those with the female character pissing on the face of the male; yet that's not an issue right? only when its women being dominated.

Lets police what your allowed to pop a stiffy too, since we dont know how to do anything else.

The only problem I have with what you've written is that you seem to have the idea that this hasn't been going on for centuries--millennia, even. The only reason, I think, that you seem to think that this is a problem of 'this age,' as you put it, is that we've had a short period where pluralism and free speech were generally well regarded. But, censorship and government moralizing has been around for ages--probably since the time when we first started writing shit down. Basically, throughout history, this has been the norm. There's nothing 'new' about people being offended by things--sex more than most things, actually--and there's nothing new about government policing based on these 'offensive' things. Don't get me wrong. I'm glad we've mostly moved government toward a more pluralistic place, but I'd rather you not try and read into this like 'we suddenly have this problem that we've never had before, people are fucked, and we're all headed to shit.' The best parts about this 'sudden' movement is that 1) it's not at all new, and 2) it's not at all sudden. It's been going on for a long time, and we've stopped it before. Humanity has, I would guess, changed a lot less than you seem to think it has. People have been doing shit like this forever. Other than that, I think we're of the same mind here.

Well most of the points to be discussed are actually quite valid. And nothing bad is done in just *discussing* stuff either way. So all in all let them do what they do. No point in getting angry about it, I am sure their critic will fall on mostly deaf ears, sadly not only on the question of hentais, but also on the other topics.
The one point I find weird about this text in the OP is that the ordering of topics. I hope that doesn't imply an ordering of importance. Most of the points later in the list are far more valid and important than "ban violent porn".

This is ridiculous. Since when did Rape become too inappropriate to portray in adult media? I'm not just talking porn, but as a whole, regarding everything from Berserk to Nozuki No Ana.

Well the question is "how is it display in a specific media". Is it displayed in a context where it is meant to create a feeling of uneasiness in the viewer? As the evil crime? Or is it displayed in a context where it is basically catering to dark fantasies of the viewer for sexual stimulation?
I do acknowledge that is a different, albeit I still think a society should aim to have its citizens capable to differentiate between reality and fantasy enough to not need censorship of fantasies.

I think the U.N is the wrong organization because of the messes they tend to make. Take the arguably related U.N Report on Cyberharassment Report. They get it wrong so easily and they have no qualms with censorship.
