For me, GATE and Dimension W particularly stand out to me as my favorite shows of the season. I haven't gotten around to checking out Erased, but I hear it's quite good as well.

Despite the bad reviews, I'm enjoying Myriad Colors Phantom World. I've dropped pretty much all of the season now, except Erased of course.

I can't believe KonoSuba would go under the radar... So I guess I could say Shwarzesmarken, Shouwa Rakugo and Infinite Bahamut (I'm half serious here).

Most darkhorse show though is definitely Rainbow Days.

That was kinda one I expected to be good. It's not amazing, but it is enjoyable and I'm glad I didn't rely on the first episode myself. Had I, I would have dropped it there and then, but the following that it picked up greatly for me and is one of the ones I look forward to watching for the long haul.

Konosuba was the biggest surprise for me. I love the ed theme to: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vtfegt0PVr0 Sung by the Seeyus of Aqua, Megumin and Darkness.

Myriad Colors Phantom World surprised as well as as Dagashi Kashi. Both Myriad Colors and Dagashi Kashi were recommended to me.

So I went into the season mostly blind. There were a couple I knew about before hand, Erased and Myriad Colors being the biggest ones, but I had little knowledge of anything else. That being said some of my choices may seem odd as "Hidden Gems" and by some I think only one of them. I'll save that one for the second choice and I'll just start with the one that is the most talked about one here and that is Rakugo. That series had my number from minute one. I love art house stuff and that one tickled my pretentious button like none other. I loved it and I'm happy to see so many people liking it because that may means it gets a US home video market release. The great characters, the amazing story, and unique element of the story. It captured me from the first episode and makes me want more and more and more.

The second one is the one that may surprise some people and that's Aokana. It's not the typical type of series that I like that much, in fact its one I typically avoid. Still as I gave every brand new show on Crunchyroll five episodes to impress me it was one that I found myself loving because of the charm. It's not an amazing show by any stretch but it is enjoyable and for me it is a hidden gem just because it's not my normal type of series I like at. There is just something there that makes me keep coming back every week and I must say that it is just so much fun that I want to keep coming back for more.

Galko Chan is the short series that has dragged me in. The pure honest dialogue of the characters is just there. I remember overhearing cliques of girls in high school having these conversations. It can border on the crass and risque sometimes but no more than any real teenage conversations. It really is why I think I love it and it surprised me. Once again I thought, well I'll give this one five episodes and be done with it, but honestly I'm still watching it and still enjoying it to the point where I've actually marathoned every episode out a couple of times now simply because of how quick witted the humor is and how smart the writing is.

Konosuba was another one that I was surprised by. I'll keep this one brief, from the moment he drags Aqua, who by the way is a b**** during much of that scene, I knew I was not in for a typical harem show. It makes me laugh from the Goddess being next to useless to the first big bad villain showing up and complaining about how someone is blowing up his castle day after day after day. I love it. To the fact that the guy who is normally the side kick is the main hero and the guy who would be the main hero is so involved in the fantasy setting and the glory that he does not even see his faulted logic.

The last one I'll put down is Tabimachi Lateshow. Again this will be very short. I wrote a review for it on it's page so if you really want more than what I'm about to give just go read that. Long and the short it gives the emotions that it was through pure story and minimalistic animation. That's it. read my review if you want more.

Konosuba was pretty okay too. I think I'm enjoying anime more when I have really low/bad expectations for them.

It is hard for me, but I try and go into each anime with no expectations. usually when I have some sort of expectations I am disappointed. For example Attack on Titan I went into with expectations because of people raving about it. I couldn't get past the 1st episode. Not saying my taste or anybody elses taste is better; just different.

Konosuba or Galko Chan for me.

Konosuba isn't exactly "hidden" at this point but one of the few shows that didn't have much hype coming into the season.

Shorts are always debatable quality and little hype but Galko Chan has been amazing and not everyone gives shorts a chance.

Many of the other shows were either previously hyped up (not hidden) or have not performed well enough to be considered a gem..

Does it really get better? I have never almost fallen asleep while watching anime, but I was seconds away from dropping my head on the keyboard about 40 mins into the 1st episode. I don't exactly see a point in the show other than talking and a slowly created relationship. Specifically I was hoping the plot would take a turn, not a fan of actors acting like actors in a show. I do like the voice actors, who I do recognize.

Rakugo is definitely a hidden gem imo as well. Dimension W and Konosuba are also series that I found surprisingly enjoyable (in animated form). Erased isn't really a hidden gem as it's far too popular this season.

Personally, I also enjoy Dagashi Kashi quite a bit.

Everyone expected ERASED to be the anime to watch this season so no surprises for that. I'll have to repeat what many others have already said and mention Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju, Konosuba and Sekko Boys. The first because it's simply amazing, the second because it's after all much funnier than I was hoping it'd be (still misses a beat now and then, but oh well...) and the third because it's actually quite the smart comedy, compared to its demented premise .

It does get better. The episodes are normal length after the first one, but it is definitely a show about the characters. Without spoiling anything, there will be more performances but they tend to take a backseat to the characterization, which is top-notch. The actual story is starting to get really interesting as well.
