It's worse now than when I worked for someone else years ago. But if I ever get myself in an interview situation with a potential employer (won't happen real world time as I'm perfectly content being self-employed) and this question was poised re employment I'd point 1 of my fingers (hopefully, not the middle one) in the direction of 1 of the oceans and politely inform that out there somewhere is a killer whale gliding through its domain with a microchip containing all my personal and temporal information likely still stuck in its blow hole. You're more than welcome to go find it, fool. .

I don't really know how I should feel about this. On one hand, employees doing trashy stuff on the internet might damage certain companies reputations. But on the other hand, I kind of feel like people should have the right to do express themselves in almost anyway they want the internet......

Blegh, if some person who I hoped to employ me were to look up my name in the future, they would find all these stupid websites and accounts I had to make for school....

unfortunately if you're willing to put it out there then it's fair game, just better to not have any accounts. if you do then just be smart about what you post..essentially post cat & sloth pics.

I think the problem comes more down to how many people don't realize the internet is a public space and leave their Facebook, etc public instead of private. 50 years ago if you had a reputation for drunkenly pissing on dumpsters around town you weren't going to get hired. These days if you post pictures of yourself drunkenly pissing on dumpsters around town with the hashtag #pissdumpsterYOLO you're not going to get hired either.

These days a single employee, via the power of the interwebs, can cause a much larger PR problem for a company than they could 50 years ago. The actions of a single employee can even outright sink a smaller business if they're heinous or idiotic enough.

Ask for the head of HR's facebook account in return. If they don't provide it walk away from that untrustworthy company.

They can look at my FB profile if they can get past the privacy settings. And if they ask to actually access my profile details, I'll ask them politely , but firmly to "jog on". No one's getting in there but me! :P

If you dont have two accounts, one for shitposting and one for hiding our power levels and you get fired because you shitpost on your real account, then I really dont feel bad for you .

I don't think they should be checking on people's social media. We all have completely different lives and personas in work and out of work. Just because you may seem rather immature on facebook (is there anyone who isn't on that site?), doesn't mean you can't do your job properly when you are in work.

As for them wanting to stop people saying stuff like "my job is shite", well...if people say their job is shite then it probably is. If they're worried about that, maybe they should work harder to make their working conditions better and treat their staff better, rather than just spying on them and not letting them express an opinion.

I think its a necessity a lot of people behave very questionable online and if you work for me you represent part of my company.
Of course of you work in production and none of my customers will ever interact with you i might not need to have you checked out as much as for example a salesman.

That's why I never use my last name on social media. Rookie mistake.

Image search is your friend

Never use the same images on each site either. The fact that I changed my profile picture 5 seconds after replying this is completely irrelevant. *cough*
