Pretty certain that it's trying to pull in at least 720p based on network traffic (some vids can be watched full res with free accounts). But the problem is probably not on your side, because as far I understand, Crunchyroll is really inefficient with their streaming. Technical jargon below.

So I ask Crunchyroll to start using a more efficient streaming method. Because lagging in SD with a 300mbps connection is not acceptable.

It uses adaptive streaming to match your end-to-end connection to CR's servers.

This is the first time I've ever heard of such a streaming method, and does not make any kind of sense to me.

CR uses adaptive streaming on their apps to match your end-to-end connection to CR's servers.

Uh, yeah, of course it doesn't make sense, but based on the amount of connections to Amazon's servers and the requests being sent and returning, this is the assumption that I made. Of course, if someone from Crunchyroll can come and prove my points wrong, I'd be happy about it, but that still wouldn't change that there's something wrong on Crunchyroll's (or Amazon's) servers and that they should at the very least change their codec. Crunchyroll has lagged almost anywhere I've used it.

We don't use AWS.
I cannot give you details regarding what set-up or technology we use, but I can tell you that the thing you quoted is entirely false.

Fair enough. I thought it didn't make sense, but now what's making all those connections is what I have to figure out. Probably a currently unknown virus.
