welp. i see the monarch as the last resort lady. She steps in when the pm is making a muss of things and kicks the pm and dissolves the current government. She should exist! Mainly because she's seen it all and can advise the current party in power and keep them in check, preventing a dictatorship from happening. If it does happen she can just dissolve parliament and force it to reform. She doesn't step in unless absolutely necessary though.

As for the person claiming the queen is a waste of tax payer money. Your passports are issued in the name of the queen. The taxes are collected in the name of the queen. lol.

It's an outdated system that I'm surprised is still present in this day in age..

There just doesn't seem to be the will to end the monarchy of Britain. Republicans are out there, but they're not a strong enough or interested enough force based on the numbers I've seen. I don't particularly care.

8-bit theatre says what I'm thinking.

A monarchy is much more efficient and practical than a council of elitist nobodys that do nothing and say whatever they think voters want to hear, so long as everyone that qualifies for the crown is fit for the job.

The Queen is essentially a very well spoken lady with an immense volume of matching skirt suits and hats.

Anyone who says she is a last resort politically* is out of their minds and doesn't understand the British Government system. (*SEE - COALITION GOVERNMENT. Boo.)
I have no issue with there being a queen in reality. It's good for tourism... and that's about it.

God knows people will need a decent reason to visit the UK if we leave the EU...
SIGH.

Well ya still have those blokes in the fancy red jackets and tall hats right? Last time I was in London I saw a lot of tourists getting their kicks off trying to make them react.

Of course you lot could try making the food a little more appealing. Black pudding, fish and chips, and spotted dick are not my cup of tea. And bloody hell who thought up minty peas, that's just wrong.

I want to defend people but... I essentially live on Thai cooking because I hate bland food.
What I will say however, is that there is a bad way of cooking any dish. Fresh peas crushed with salt, mint, butter and garlic are delicious.

Oh, and Black pudding can be pretty damn good also. Just not on a greasy fry up.
(Can you tell I cook?)

Can't vouch for the pudding. You got me there.

LONG LIVE THE QUEEN?

I want to say something but now that I think about Canada is a part of the Commonwealth..Damn that is going to make our trade deals with the EU awkward to say the least.

And despite the fact I am a certified chef I would never in a million years ever combine peas, salt, mint, butter, and garlic together. But hey being a super taster and lactose intolerant means perhaps I am somewhat biased.

I personally believe the Monarchy plays an important heritage role and can instill a healthy sense of patriotism by being part of our national identity. I realize the days of the Royal Family playing a non-symbolic role in the the UK and the Commonwealth Realms is over, but I don't see the point in going so far as to abolish the Monarchy as an institution altogether.

Admittedly I might be a tad biased towards the issue, being from a very pro-monarchy family, so my answer to the question shouldn't be taken as a factual statement of the way things are. All I know for sure is we just got a public holiday and a day off work for celebrating the birthday of Queen Victoria's. Did YOU get a day off yesterday?

Suck it, you republican swine . God save the Queen.
