Anyone else reading the series in English or Japanese? Want to discuss? We can discuss it here without worrying too much about spoiling the anime watchers though I will still spoiler some stuff in this first post here, just in case.

I'll start this off with some Koyomimonogatari spoilers since people are wondering who comes next.

REMEMBER IF ANYONE QUOTES ME AND SPOILER TAGS IT, OPENING THE OUTER SPOILER WILL OPEN ALL OF THEM. So be warned.

Spoiler, character and title of next week:

After that... spoiler:

Then... spoiler:

Then... the big spoilers. You may not want to read these ones:

And the final one. You really, really probably don't want to read this spoiler:

To be followed by Owarimonogatari V3 in Owarimonogatari Season 2 and the arc I'm most looking forward to:

Then...

And then finally...

Zoku anyone? Orokamonogatari? Wazamonogatari? Might be too far ahead but we can discuss Kizumonogatari too.

I'm going to get into this novel series soon although I want to know a few things. Are there any major differences/cuts from the TV series/OVA/etc that have already aired compared to the novels?

For now, I just want to know about Bakemonogatari and Nisemonogatari. I plan to read Kizumonogatari, Koyomimonogatari, and Owarimonogatari soon.

Thanks

There have been some medium-major cuts mostly caused because Kizumonogatari hadn't come out yet. There were some piece of Shinobu's story which didn't make sense to tell when we hadn't seen that in anime yet. But they did a good job with them.

For the most part they are word for word and when they cut, they usually cut entire chapters which you can actually see on screen as they show the chapter numbers as they go. E.g. you'll notice in Koyomimonogatari they have cut the first intro chapter out of every arc so far. Whenever the numbers are not sequential, they have cut a chapter so they are pretty up front about it. If you watch the episodes carefully you can find which chapters they skipped and just read those ones if you like.

They were quite accurate with First Season. They cut more in Second Season, due to time (which is weird as they had recap episodes but Shaft was busy with other shows at the time). Some arcs were 3-4 episodes and needed to be much longer to do them fully. Sometimes they supplement this on the Bluray version, for example in Nekomonogatari White they include Tsubasa's long letter to Black Hanekawa on the Bluray as an audio bonus (strange it was on the BD, not the bonus CD) but it was entirely missing in the TV version.

I very much want to read the series, but haven't found the time yet. I think, unfortunately, my Japanese isn't nearly good enough for me to handle it in Japanese.

My #2 spot on my >definetly going to read just don't know when I'm finally get around to< list.
Note to self: find a shorter name for that list.

Give it a try. While native Japanese readers find nisioisin very difficult I don't find it to be that bad. He plays with language in such a way that foreign learners of Japanese may actually have an easier time of it. I at least am always thinking about kanji individually and in jukugo and the meanings and I don't think native Japanese speakers think about their language that way. It is natural to them so it is a bit unnatural for them to think of the word play while adults learning a second language learn very differently than native speakers and learn kanji all at once rather than a few every year through school. We also tend to read adult fiction first rather than starting with kids books. You can probably find at least introductory pages or chapters legally on the web if you want to give it a try.

Monogatari is my #1 series and franchise, both anime and in novels (in all languages) so it is also #1 on my "I buy and actually read the books!" list. I have another list of books which I buy and then often never read or don't read for years while Monogatari actually gets read pretty quickly after they come out.

Thanks of the answer!

Can't wait to see Kizumonogatari soon though I hope the third movie won't be delayed. In the meantime, there's still a Monogatari series airing at the moment

You're welcome.

The Kizumonogatari 1 movie is coming here but still no dates so probably months off. I suspect I'll import the bluray before I see it in the theater, just like LoveLive Movie.

Koyomimonogatari right now is great and I truly hope that we get Owarimonogatari S2 soon. It's airing date hasn't been announced yet but... there's still time for it to be summer or even spring. As you'll see after the last episode of Koyomimonogari, which will be one of the biggest cliffhangers ever, people will really, really want to see the first episode of Owari S2. Those two episodes are my most anticipated episodes ever. I'm perhaps even spoiling it a bit to say my feelings but wow... in case even vaguely worded feelings are going to spoil you:

If you want to know who I'm talking about, just ask though the title of the 1st arc of Owarimonogatari 3 already gave it away.

Finished reading Bakemonogatari volume 1 today (going to finish the other volumes and probably Kizumonogatari later today) too.

Great series so far and the humor with the dialogues are just as entertaining as I remember. Plus, I think the novels really bought out Kanbaru's personality with the way she interacted with Araragi. Senjougahara is as memorable as I could recall from the first volume as well (ha, the way she dressed from top first, then the bottom is priceless).

Shinobu didn't get much lines yet but I think that's understandable since I don't remember her saying much at all from Bake.

It's also nice that the novel series give some decent depiction of the Oddities too. Meme Oshino is also an interesting character, been awhile since I've read about him again. The way the first novel described Araragi's being bitten by the vampire also gave a surreal feel too.

Kanbaru is a fun character in the second half of the first volume, really enjoyed her interactions, personality, and chemistry with Araragi. What a sporty girl.

The second volume of Bakemonogatari is great too.

If you enjoy his writing you should check out the character commentaries from the Blurays as well. The one for Sodachi Lost with Sodachi and Hitagi is just priceless, I think the best one he ever wrote and Chiwa and Inoue especially do such a great job delivering their lines. 1:15 of those two chatting is well worth the price along with the new OP but... this is the book forum.... nisioisin writes the character commentaries so interestingly we still don't find out about the end of Lost the thing that many people wondered... too bad.

Finished Kizumonogatari today. That was fun. Though I still find it strange that it was the first one to be translated, but I hope Vertical will manage to translate all of them, even if it takes their translator longer to translate a book than Nisioisin to write one. If not I really finally for real need to kick my arse to learn Japanese

Chronologically it is the first. Not sure if Kodansha offered it first rather than Bakemonogatari? I agree it is a bit odd not to do Bakemonogatari first unless someone else bought the rights and never bothered to use them.

Edit: from Vertical's tweets they're doing Bakemonogatari now but in three parts for some strange reason
