Japanophile is often a pejorative term, used to denote a person who is supposedly socially inept and spends too much time fantasizing about certain aspects of Japanese culture.

Are you discussing the term weaboo or Japanophile? The term weaboo as far as I know, comes from websitenamehere /letter/. Originally started as an anime appreciation board, it quickly degenerated into the asshole of the internet (although while it was good it was great). One of the jokes of the mods was to wordfilter the word Wapanese into Weaboo. Whenever someone typed wapanese, it would post as weaboo. Henceforth weaboo's were born.

Edited to protect the children... No seriously

Either that or where does weaboo originate from, which as I stated, wordfilter for Japanophile on a popular imageboard.

Well, these are linked in the same Wiki article:

See also
Anglophile
Francophile
Japonism
Orientalism
Asiaphile
Sinophile

My point being that of course the concentration of Japanophiles on CR is so high, it might give you the impression that it's common thing, but it's not much more common than any of the above. Seriously, I don't think saying "Omg!Japanese guys/girls are so hot, they look like anime!" is something that makes you Japanophile, it rather proves you're an idiot.

I don’t see anything wrong with the wiki article, nor the /b/tard who linked “weeaboo” to it. That term is thrown around so much outside of /b/ it’s hardly privileged information anymore.

I think crunchyroll consists primarily of three types of users. Azns looking asian media, casual narutards getting their fix, and full blown japanophiles. I suppose there are a minority of us casual anime fans lurking on here as well. That being said, most of the japanophiles here are either not going to get this (as in thread topic, not my post specifically) or become offended and defensive.

I particularly agree with the statement “Japanophile is often a pejorative term, used to denote a person who is supposedly socially inept and spends too much time fantasizing about certain aspects of Japanese culture.”

I think there are there three basic appeals of Japanohphilia – escapism, rebellion, and social identity.

Much of the appeal of Japanese culture to the westerner is how alien, exotic, and mysterious it is. It’s similar to the west, but yet very foreign. Anime and other form of Japanese pop culture paint an idealized picture of japan. Since that is where japanophiles get the majority of the information about japan, they end up getting a very warped understanding of the place. Suddenly Japan becomes a magical land that will make all their dreams come true, a place were they will suddenly fit in and be accepted. People are beautiful, life is sweet, adventure abounds, and they will be appreciated.

Also, these social misfits feel rejected by their own culture. So they rebel against it. They go so far as to try to adopt a completely foreign culture and then boldly proclaim it superior to their own. Since there are so few of their peers who know much about it, the individual in question feels special and unique in the fact that they were the only ones “smart” enough to recognize this, when the truth of the matter is that they failed so miserably to function socially, they had to go to such extremes justify their failure.

Another key factor is the adolescent search for identity. Not everyone easily fits in with the preps, jocks, freaks or [insert cliques from your school here], so they go out of their way to find something unusual to identify with, much for the same reasons listed above (the unusualness of the identity affirms them as being “above” other more normal people, as opposed to being social failures).

The results are comic to say the least. Idiot teenagers speaking in broken butchered Japanese, buying overpriced Japanese snack food that really doesn’t taste all that good, making a big deal over anything they run into that is Japanese. You get the picture.

The truth of the matter is that if these kids go to japan for an extended period of time they’ll feel just as rejected and out of place as they do here. I was in japan for three months and got to see quite a bit first hand. People are surprised when I say I’d rather be an anime fan in the US than in japan. I really think (overall) we have it better over here in regards to an anime fandom.

There are a lot of really cool things about japan (such as the food and the fact they force all their young girls to wear short skirts year round), but it sure as hell isn’t utopia. It has its share of problems. I think geeks/nerds are treated even worse over there than here, though I think there is a higher per capita rate of them there. “Genshiken” is an otaku fantasy, most Japanese otaku are miserable and alone.

There is nothing wrong with exploring and appreciating other cultures, but the important thing is to keep things in perspective. There is plenty good about most cultures if you invest the time to research them. I hear japanophiles complain about how much they hate their own culture and I ask them if they’ve ever bothered looking into any deeper than MTV afternoon programming. Western culture has a rich a full history that japanophiles ignore – and I pity them for it.

There isn’t anything wrong with a westerner enjoying anime and asian pop culture, but when it’s done to an extreme exclusivity and for the sole reason of it’s geographic origin, then there is a problem.

On the mentioning of /b/…. that place is a cesspool of adolescent internet immaturity. I’m sure it used to be cool once, and it’s still good for an occasional laugh, but it’s been overrun by morons. In fact, they crashed and burned when they tried to take down one of the net’s most notorious weeaboos. One little japanophile girl shut them down hard. At this point they’re just a pathetic joke.

taken from encyclopedia dramatica's artical on Japanophiles

"The purest form of faggotry.

Japanophiles are western people who love everything to do with Japan, even (especially?) the creepy bits, like the coin-operated panty dispensers and blackfaced, screeching women. They are usually fat and socially inept (male), or fat and delusional about their looks (female) and can be identified by their Cowboy Bebop wallscrolls, appreciation for J-pop and insistence on cosplaying. Not to mention walking around the city with a fucking Pocky sticking out of the mouth.

Japanophilia is not to be confused with pedophilia, as there are several key differences. For example, pedophiles are obsessed with making love to children whereas Japanophiles are obsessed with Anime, writing with chopsticks, downloading gigabytes of hentai and annoying the fuck out of you at parties by talking at length about their interpretation of Neon Genesis Evangalion. Both, however, masturbate over pictures of schoolgirls.

Japanophiles do not reproduce by conventional means; most die as virgins and those that do not are usually imprisoned for rape. Instead, they use the internet to influence vulnerable teenagers to watch episodes of Trigun before leading them on to the harder (and less comprehensible stuff). Soon the anime meme has infected the poor teen's brain and he has become a mindless Japanophile too.

The Japanophile's life cycle can end three ways; either dying an elderly virgin surrounded by small plastic figurines that cost hundreds of dollars each, being raped to death in prison (irony) or committing suicide after arriving in Japan and discovering that it's not full of enormously-breasted women who want to sleep with pasty, fat caucasian lardballs. The last words of the latter Japanophiles are usually "Megatokyo lied to me..."
