http://www.newstatesman.com/culture/film/2016/02/ghost-shell-over-two-decades-old-remains-our-most-challenging-film-about

so I was browsing the inter-connected network's of computers website news and found this.

For one, I'm happy that anime made it to mainstream news :D.

But... they're hyping Ghost in the Shell up like it's AoT (Dante) or Mushi-shi or something.

I saw one Ghost in the Shell movie, and didn't think much about it.

Is Ghost in The Shell really that good? Like is it worth critical acclaim and anime awards, and fandom? It seems like a rip off of .hack (I think .hack came first?)

I want to say that it's a rip off of The Matrix and Lain, but Ghost in The Shell came first :/.

Ghost in the Shell started as a manga in 1989 and was adapted into an animation in 1995.
.hack was launched as a video game in 2002 and was adapted into an animation at roughly the same time.

Every single thing Masamune Shirow does is worth critical acclaim and awards. Without exception.

Sorry, I love hack but Ghost in The Shell Own 99 percent of all anime. You can call me an asshole for saying this but this is not an opinion. IS A FACT. http://www.funimation.com/shows/ghost-in-the-shell-arise/home

Honestly I don't get the appeal either. I've tried so hard to sit through either the first movie or Standalone Complex on multiple occasions over the years because I want to understand the hype, but I just can't do it. I get so very, very bored. I'd try Arise as well, but I'm not anticipating a different reaction.

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (1st & 2nd Gig) is one of my favorite animes of all time. To me, the appeal is the way it forces you to think about life, the soul, and the combination of humanity/machines. I don't recommend watching, however, unless you can give it 100% of your attention. The complex social situations and philosophies are intense and unless you've studied that it can be hard trying to follow all the nuances. Even if you dismiss those aspects, and just watch, it is still a stunning visual/auditory treat with some of the most dynamic music every placed in an anime.

I'm not a fan of any of the original movies, Arise, or the manga. I don't think those are as interesting or that the stories are as good.
