Edit: Japan's population problem has much more to do with socio-economic conditions over there being hostile and non-conducive to getting together and raising a family:

Here's a summary of the article by DeadlyOats:

It seems that if the Japanese government changed its tax codes, and if Japanese corporations took away the penalties from married women, that after a generation, the problem would solve itself. The trouble is that it's the old-timers that are stuck in their old ways that are making the rules...

Change tax codes to reward married couples; make it easier for married couples to buy a house; get rid of the the old traditions in corporate Japan that punishes married women...... The article shows that these three things make being single the optimum choice in Japan, the way things are now...

Japan’s population has fallen by nearly one million people in five years - the first decline since official census records started in the 1920s.

Between 2010 and 2015, Japan lost 947,345 citizens, more people than the entire population of San Francisco.

As the nation has grown progressively older and the birth rate has fallen, Japan has faced a population crisis.

...

Japan also faces the problem of a rapidly ageing society and has one of the highest populations of elderly citizens of anywhere in the world.

According to a report by the University of Pensylvania titled ‘the graying of Japan’, those over 65 now already account for roughly a quarter of the country’s population.

Worker shortage wouldn't be a problem in future Japan if robots are handling all the work by then.

If I start a kickstarter, will you CR users help fund PV's Sexual Stimulation Program? If all things go to plan, Japan will be the most populous nation in 2050!

(yes I know that was a semi-joke but)

Making them want to commit suicide would be counterproductive when the goal is to raise the birthrate.

I am so very not supprised. Reforming work cutlure? Nah. Reforming the education system? Nah. Still expecting young people to be part of that fucked up cutlure torn between feudalism and modern times? Hell yeah!

What magic have you used on them?

I was taught about this in human geography a few years back. This is happening in America too. In countries where people raise kids for work like on farms there is often overpopulation. In Japan people are becoming more comfortable and prosperous, and many people don't see reason to have children.
