They have big eyes, so the bronies think it's anime.

I don't really get the appeal of MLP, but to be fair, there are a lot of other kids' shows and movies I have enjoyed throughout the years, including some targeted at girls. Anime like Sailor Moon, cartoons like Powerpuff Girls, Disney movies like The Little Mermaid (and newer CG ones like Frozen), etc. I also follow the newest Ninja Turtles on Nickelodeon, and I'll probably see Zootopia in the future.

If some guys just liked MLP, I don't think it'd be an issue. It's the very vocal/active furry community around it that gives it a bad rep. Liking MLP is now synonymous with wanting to dress up as a pretty pink pony and have sex with pretty purple ponies. Those fans also get a bad rep for sexualizing characters that the show does not.

When the show itself sexualizes the characters, it's a little more acceptable. Monogatari, for example. It's not as weird when a guy finds Shinobu cute/sexy because that's the point. She's naked in scenes, and purposely seductive. Monogatari fans didn't make her that way out of nowhere, like bronies did with MLP, so it doesn't seem bizarre. But when you take something innocent and meant for kids and sexualize it, that's when it starts to feel weird.

It's like if TMNT fans were known for drawing Leo/Raph incest... It's not that the show itself is horrid.
The loudest fanbase just twisted it into something it never was or should have ever been.

No one outside of 10 year old kids truly like MLP, at the end of the day it's just like being goth or punk or emo or whatever highschool clique you thought would garner you the most attention. They know they aren't who it's for and they know people will question them for liking it but even negative attention is attention. The only ones who don't fall into that are category of "brony" are the warped pervs who have a really creepy fetish on their hands.

The organized Brony fandom always claims "We're not a 'Gateway drug' for a 'Gay recruitment drive'!"

But try explaining that to anime fans who were there in the proto-anime 90's, and had to face real "persecution" for watching misunderstood cartoons:
Back when everyone was having a grand old "WTF??" guffaw at the dubbed Sailor Moon on local stations, us early anime fans watched the subtitled version, and tried to get normal people sold on the idea that Usagi was really a cute, lovable character, and the stories did get you hooked, it was just the dub that made it look bad. If some new fan, cringing in secret shame like some new member at an AA meeting, confessed that he thought Ami was cute, we'd known immediately what he was talking about, say "I'm more of a Sailor Jupiter fan, m'self", and it would put the new fan at his ease that he was in the company of fans who knew the same show he watched.
If we heard that somebody's non-fan little sister watched the afternoon dub and liked it for itself, we didn't go into howls that she "couldn't understand the show like we did", or make quasi-misogynist assumptions that she was the "wrong kind of fan" for the show, we just shrugged "Good for her, she's got taste! " and wondered whether she was too young to get hooked on a few tapes of the subbed version.

If that same new cringing, closeted, misunderstood fan came to a Brony meeting with a secret confession of liking Pinky Pie, he would be more likely to be welcomed with, "Of course they misunderstand you for it, but that's what makes you SPECIAL! Don't worry, you're with a select group that will understand you when the rest of the world doesn't, because we know what it's like to be in touch with our hearts, and our love for the show is reflected in our love and support for each other!"

Uhhhhhhh-huh. Yep, I don't see a 'gateway drug' or 'recruitment drive' there for impressionable, socially-beaten high-school and college kids in their first search of an independent identity.
Why, they just welcome the fangirl audience that just wants to splash their particular fandom all over their Facebook page.

Not gonna lie, watched it with my sister a couple times and I ended up liking it, it's lighthearted, fun, kinda energetic at times as well. It's also a good pastime imo as well, I don't mind watching it but that's me personally. On another note, the pics and questions you put up can also be asked about a lot of cringey anime fans as well.

I don't watch this show. I watched it once, because the anime forum I belong to was all, "OMG THIS IS FUNNY AND AWESOME!!" So I thought I'd watch an episode. While it was cute, it was not for me. Luckily most the members who are into this show are sane and not the horse-f**king types with even one of the girls that I'm friendly with showing off her collection of ponies...not this show's but the original 80s version.

As for why this show is popular with male audiences especially....I really have no idea. Maybe it's the animelike art, maybe there's some hidden message...I've heard that a lot of adults like it due to the fact that while kids get into some things, some adults might pick up on jokes that the little ones wouldn't get.

All I know is that everytime I hear a story about some sick crap that some Brony does, I feel bad for the normal fans who just like this show.

Because of voice acting. Plain and simple. Tara Strong !

But to be honest I have no idea why there is actually something called brony. Like wtf seriously, just appreciate the show, don't become a creep about it singing light hearted songs while you stab people in the name of the show...... people ruin it for everyone.

Oh and subliminal messaging is the main reason. If you have ever watched it, the show basically proves that every single character is actually insane and bat shit crazy, which is why people actually create such things.

Don't believe me? Why else would they do it if not for the reason of clinically insane attitude throughout the actual show.

Mind games my friend, they make you believe you are happy and friendly so they can actually expose your insanity and violent nature.

You think this is about friendship and magic? That's just the result they want, the real message is to suppress your insanity and mental flaws through the magic of friendship, which is why the Brony came to be.......

I just answered my question

Pretty scary stuff right? If you really think about it, it makes total sense.

People go with the flow, if they see other people doing, they do as well. Brony faction, is a fad, and like all fads they will die. Just some furries gone bad, aka follow the leader, but that is nothing new.

First question. Bronies why do you like My Little Pony? Whats not to like? Its a cute show with stories and characters I find interesting

Second question what the hell is the show about? Friendship and overcoming the obstacles that can come with it. You could also just watch a few episodes to see for yourself

3 Why is this advertise as a pure kid show? Most cartoons in America are advertised for kids, and you know, the fact that its about cute little ponies learning about friendship and magic

4 Why do you guys cosplay as My Little Pony characters? Why do anime fans cosplay as anime characters? For fun of course! Surprised a anime fan would even ask why people cosplay

5 Is there some kind of plot? Besides friendship. Main plot is the main character learning lessons about friendship and other things, there is other mini plots like saving equestria or little pony's trying to get there cutie mark and ect.

Let me explain why I am asking this.
I see this. This a kid show. Meh.

Pokemon is a kid show but that does not mean only kids like it and there's nothing wrong with watching a nice show teaching you how to be a good friend and not to judge others

Also Noticed how you had to search for the worst cosplay picture :P
Its more like this
