Ojisan and Marshmallow, more commonly translated as Ojisan to Marshmallow, is a comedic short following the attempts of young office lady Wakabayashi to seduce her older coworker Hige, primarily by exploiting his love of Tabekko brand marshmallows. If that seems like something of a limiting, thin plot, just remember that this program is a short. The humor ranges from self-deprecating to occasionally crass, while Wakabayashi's performance remains consistently deadpan (and is probably the show's single most successful running gag). The jokes are funny enough; individual storylines are cute; and the story arc plays out with a consistent progression. This show does what it does fairly well, but I doubt that it could support a longer episodic run time. As is appropriate for a marshmallow, there is simply more fluff than substance.

To be honest, I initially thought that this series was a thinly veiled advertising ploy for the protagonist's favorite marshmallow brand. Turns out, however, that there actually is no Genkitadou, Inc., manufacturing Tabekko brand marshmallows. Too bad, as I would have at least been impressed with the marketing effort. What we do occasionally get (at the end of certain episodes) are lessons in cooking with marshmallows. These instructive kitchen hijinks can quickly hijack the show, to the point that I've even begun expecting to see an episode of JK-MESHI! showcasing the marshmallow as premier ingredient. Meanwhile, Ojisan and Marshmallow remains a fun show that recognizes its own limitations and doesn't mind working within them. In short (yeah, you see what I did there!), this show actually reminds me more of a butter mint--a brief bit of sweet indulgence, quietly tasty before almost immediately melting away. So fleeting, but so enjoyable!

I'm a bit confused--the program names were italicized. What happened?

Unlike that other short with magical girls (I like to call Dumpster Kyubey) the humor in this one mostly works.

Agreed. I sometimes wonder if that particular show deliberately prefers awkwardness to humor. . .and still, I watch.

I think they're just copy-pasting the post from the forum text and not the BB-code, so it ends up getting lost. I can understand why, since it's difficult to edit from BB-code, or to edit plain text then have to manually re-input the BB-code.

Why are we even still using BB-code, anyway?
