Dude, did you hear their latest album? "The Marrow of a Bone" is filled with growling, roars and hard guitars sounding all metal and stuff. Seriously, I want the old Dir en grey..

Okay... Then how would you classify death metal. I don't want examples of death metal, I want a definition.

A definition aye?

Death metal, a form of metal that could be said to evolve from thrash metal. Discarding use of the pop hooks, death metal focuses mores on the technical aspect of playing. Instead of letting notes ring out, death metal uses the faster tempos and riffs remnicient of thrash metal, but discards the standard drumming for a more consistent, technical style to which the guitars would favour riffs that were played faster with alot more variety in note selection.

In guitar sections, you would hear palm muted and tremelo picked sections with varying notes to create atmosphere rather than suspending your notes ie holding a power chord. Palm muting riffs would most often be used for percussive effect in time with the drumming, usually on the bass kick. The drumming is far more complex, adding more than the standard triplet bass kick found in older thrash bands and keeping a constant double kick pace.

Tempos are generally faster and change often, rather than having the same tempo throughout the whole song. Most death metal bands dont follow the typical intro/verse/chorus style of pop and rock music.

Then you can explore their sub genres. Melodeath, techdeath, blackened death, brutal death etc.

3 Examples you must watch are, Death - Lack of Comprehension, Possessed - Death Metal and Obituary - Slowly we Rot.

For dir en grey. They would still be seen as a J-rock band. Well strictly speaking, they would be a Hardcore Rock band. Alot of hardcore bands encorporate screaming/growling in their music too. If you compare anything off Marrow to anything by Death you would see the difference.
