Bangladesh could drop Islam as the country's official religion following a string of extremist attacks against people of other faiths.

The supreme court in the South Asia nation has began to hear arguments which challenge Islam's status as the official state religion.

It comes after a spate of attacks against people of other religions such as Hindus, Christians, and minorities Shi'ites, which have been blamed on Islamic extremists.

When Bangladesh was formed in 1971 after the nation split from Pakistan, it was declared a secular state.

However, in 1988 the country's constitution was amended with Islam declared as the state religion.

But this is now being disputed as illegal in the latest court battle and is being supported by religious minority leaders.

Meanwhile the US has also warned that ISIS is stepping up recruitment in Bangladesh, even though the government says the extremist problems are home grown.

One Bangladesh police official told Breitbart: 'We have made arrests on each and every so-called ISIS-claimed attack.

'The attackers have confessed their crimes in court. They have also confessed being a Jamaatul Mujahedin Bangladesh member, and denied any linkage with ISIS.'

However an American director of National Intelligence has insisted attacks were the work of terrorist groups.

In a written testimony to the U.S. Senate James Clapper noted the claims of responsibility from ISIS for 11 high profile attacks on foreigners and religious minorities, and claims from the Ansarullah Bangla Team and al-Qaida in the Indian Subcontinent for killing at least 11 progressive writers and bloggers in Bangladesh since 2013.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh has been in political ferment since the run-up to January 2014 elections.

They were boycotted by opposition parties, and over war crimes prosecutions brought against Jamaat-e-Islami leaders over alleged involvement in atrocities during Bangladesh's 1971 war of independence.

Muslims make up some 90 percent of Bangladesh’s population, while Hindus account for 8 percent and other religions—including Buddhism and Christianity—make up the rest.

What's the point of a official religion?

Everyone has their own 2 cents on religion and which one should be followed but I truly believe as a very important person told me it's just a guide on how to live your life..OMG, I said it , i'm going to hell now. Well, so be it. Moving forward, if there is a religion that has a correlation but not causation in terrorist attacks then use that and make appropriate action. If the result is well heck, looks like there's a decline in terrorists attacks, banning that religion was the correct path then so be it. These terrorists like to hide like cowards behind their religion to do the most heinous of all crimes. Maybe i'm wrong though, maybe this country shouldn't ban a whole religion and try other tactics to get rid of these attacks but maybe they have and this is the last and only resort. Thus, to get rid of terrorism altogether and you have tried all other options then ban their fucking religion too. Terrorists don't show mercy and neither should good honest folk.

Ugh, Breitbart via the Daily Fail.

The headline and the article are two different stories.

Good! Bangladesh has been really comming up in the world of Cricket and it is a real shame that they are held back due to such things.
Australia canceled a tour there due to safety concerns. They really are coming up and it would be good for them.
Dont want for them to end uup like Pakistan, a cricket loving nation and former world champions only to then have ZERO cricket played there due to terrorisim/security issues.

Just an example.

as someone who actually died I can tell you that religion is pointless I understand why its needed but if you actually spend 10 minutes doing research you will see that it doesn't matter who you are what you do where you are born what you believe in your sexual preference whether you were good or evil we all go to the same place. By and large all reports going back to the 12 century are the same pretty much what's taken out of context is the time period in which these cases were reported and there religious background but and mine is no different once you remove those factors each case is almost identical. On another side note there is actually no proof that Jesus was real. The profit at least had a family and with a family you have lineage and that's something that can be traced back generation after generation another fact to consider

Why don't people just drop all religion? It seems silly that the sane reasonable people among us have to suffer and live in fear, just because of a large number of idiots who can't deal with that fact that when you die, that's it and nothing happens
