The characters in an anime are all separate from myself. I don't think I'd be able to enjoy it as much if I was seeing myself in any of their shoes.

In my opinion if you attempt to self insert as an anime character, you honestly might as well kill yourself.

I don't ever put myself in the place of the character, but sometimes a character will be faced with a situation that I can relate to my own personal experiences, and sometimes the way their reactions and behaviors are portrayed are really how I felt too

As an outsider. I view the Japanese shows as Japanese. That's what they are, afterall. I watch and read other foreign media, and feel similarly towards them. There's generally some level of cultural rift that prevents me from entirely identifying.

If you mean which nationality you see anime as being then:

When I first started watching anime, I imagined the setting was America (just from a slightly different area to explain differences in schooling and stuff).
But I slowly started seeing the setting as Japan as I watched more Anime and saw more cultural differences.
Now, I see anime as being clearly Japanese.

If you mean do I self-insert myself as a character then:

I think it is more of the other way around. I see a character I admire (not limited to anime) and start to act slightly more like them.
Ex: If I liked a quiet/calm/collected character, I might say slightly fewer words and think a little more before I say something -OR if I liked a loud/heart-on-sleave character, I might just say whatever's on my mind slightly more often.
Most of the time these changes are barely noticeable though.

Are you asking if we consider ourselves Japanesse if we watch anime? No offense, but I'm not sure what you mean exactly.

ETA: Nevermind. I get it now.

I watch it as one enjoys foreign movies....which, well...that's what anime is.

Some characters I can relate to, but to put myself in that position? Nah.
