Tales

Same-y cliche stories, same character tropes--childhood friend, sullen older man, earnest hero, genki girl... etc

But... but... so hard not to play because it's so much fun. They do attempt to switch stories a bit and themes and all, and the game play has improved so much from the simple linear field they had before. What is keeping me interested are the skits, can be so totally random and funny.

This I can say since I've played quite a few starting from Phantasia up unti Zesteria.

ONLY NA Tales game I never got was the one for the Xbox--Vesperia. Couldn't justify buying a console just for that one exclusive game. Not a fan of the Xbox lineup much.

You sir can go fuck yourself Tales of Vesperia is probably the best entry in the Tales series.

As for the OP's question the only rpg I noped out of was Resonance of Fate. I liked the story well enough but damn I played Korean MMO's that were less of a grindfest .

such language

I like the tales games story wise. but i just don't understand the combat system. It went from really easy to "What the fricken hell am i supposed to do to stop this boss?"

I'd have to say Final fantasy, I think there were 4 different versions of Final fantasy 13. I really wanted to play it but I just ran into a wall because i didn't care what happened to the characters.

I did not care for 4th or 5th edition D&D, and find Exalted to be a bit clunky.

Shadowrun has a good premise, but the published scenarios have no way to account for player progression, imposing a tremendous workload on the GM as rebalancing everything takes a good deal of effort.

Final Fantasy 7.
There are other good final fantasy games out there, people!

Xenoblade, or more specifically, Xenoblade Chronicles.

I couldn't bring myself to slog through Chronicles. The quest design was a nuisance, the characters were bland or uninspiring, and I wasn't really hooked on the story.

Bravely Default was terrible, in fact it was one of the worst JRPGs I ever played. Boring and brainless battle system, random battles, endless backtracking + filler and a cast of annoying characters. However if you squint real hard you might find something resembling a 16-bit FF game so people loved it.

There are but any true gamer will respect the classic that really started the apex climb of the FF series. Have FF games gotten better since then, yeah battle systems have improved, graphics have certainly become much much better, stories have become more immersive and ever expanding with some FF games tying directly in with others.

Does that lessen the impact Final Fantasy 7 had no it does not.

My post isn't about what you're implying.
It's about RPGs that are overrated.
I find FF7 to be:

Overrated.

FF7 is definitely the first that comes to mind. Not a bad game to be sure, but it's not even the best FF game never mind the level of RPG that so many people think it is.

I agree on the Tales series as well if viewed as a single entity. They have their moments individually but have sort of congealed into a blob of sameness with far too many releases with far too few real stand outs amongst them all.

It would probably be easier just to say Bethesda RPGs. Fallout especially has been on a downward spiral since they acquired the rights to IP.
And don't get me started on Dragon Age

Every Bethesda RPG in existence. Final Fantasy 7, Final Fantasy 8. Xenoblade Chronicles. The Witcher franchise. Anything Bioware past Mass Effect 2. This should have been an underrated RPG thread, then I'd have a lot more to talk about.

Whaaat? The best Final Fantasy games came before VII, not after it. Final Fantasy IV and VI were the best. I liked IX more than VII, and X was roughly equal (better in some areas, worse in others). FF VIII was terrible, in my opinion.

Skyrim and Final Fantasy VII are probably the most overrated from my view.

Do very many people even like Final Fantasy VIII? I've mainly only met people that found it tolerable, at best. I really enjoy the Witcher series, and several Bethesda RPGs have been enjoyable - though Morrowind is the only one I will really consider a very solid RPG.
