RPG/Video Game Anime Discussion
Posted 3/9/16 , edited 3/10/16

Konichiwa Minna! This is PeripheralVisionary, and I noticed that in the last few years there are a lot of anime inspired by video games, from the atrociously still alive pokemon series to the ever popular Sword Art Online and Accel World, video game inspired anime have continued to grow in popularity, so I thought, "why not make a discussion thread about these sub genres of anime?" So this thread is for discussing these anime in a variety of ways, perhaps how they incorporate RPG like elements in their plotlines and characters to how these anime differ from one another, and everything in between! (Note: This is strictly about fantasy and Anime with clearly inspired video game roots pertaining to typical video game adaptations, such as RPGs, MMOs, and everything in between.)

There's also Onigiri airing this Spring.

Also, are you considering visual novels to fall under this category? That could add a lot to this list.

So what exactly are we supposed to be discussing? Just making a list of RPG related series taking place in a game setting world? Or our thoughts on them?

I've been reading a lot of LN/WN recently with the trope with some of them having good chance of getting an anime adaptation in the future. And quite frankly, most of them follows a similar formula:

- MC (either boy or girl) gets teleported into a fantasy world. There is usually an explanation that comes after this in the future through flashbacks, memories of the MC, or explained by a third party member
- Reincarnation: they die and get resurrected under a new identity in a fantasy world
- They must adapt in the new world if they want to survive
- There's different mechanics in every setting but most of it follows their own world building, mechanics, etc
- Monsters: different varieties but goblins, ogres, demons are the most common
- Bosses: most of them have some sort of background story or fancy name
- Saving the world
- Dungeon Raiding
- Armor, gear, potions, etc: anything you'll find in an MMORPG game
- Magic (prominent in some fantasy series but not always the case)
- School training, academy, etc to further develop skills
- Tournaments
- Various skills including hunting, potion making, magic, swordsplay, etc
- Parody (see Konosuba)
- Rules (either enforced by the local government, town, city, etc).
- Wars, imperialism, political conflicts
- Harem
- Relationships: formed as the MC stays longer and longer in the world (friendship, rivalries, romances, etc)
- Death (see Grimgal). Depending on the series, some deaths can be revived while others cannot
- Survival horror/game contest: an everyone for themselves. There is nothing else for reward except to survive and escape the world and in most cases, that world is quite hazardous (+ comes with rules too)

I used to also play a popular MMORPG game and there have been series in recent years that are inspired from them. I don't have much to add for video game adaptations. I find most of them to be mediocre with little development and emphasis from the original series.

That's true, I updated my thread to reflect your advice. I added every adaptation that I honestly think incorporate various tropes from role playing games, if not outright being based off of an RPG game itself. I'm still on the precipice of adding visual novels, certain mobile games with an emphasis on puzzles and various other non rpg elements, and others.

Depends, does the visual novel incorporate aspects from typical RPG games? For example, a game like the Rance series where there are typical RPG elements, which include overseeing a large array of commanders whose actions you control in a well defined world and story with restrictions, all the while being influenced by your traits. I declined to include Rance, despite having an anime, because it's hentai and OVA.

I feel like nodding to Rage of Bahamut and Z / X Ignition as other examples of this genre. And it helps that neither one of those is all that bad. ("FAVAROOO!")

My condolences. If you have not already done so, play Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon (DS) to get the real story behind that mess.

Thought of another one (that is not particularly good, unlike its source game): Star Ocean EX. And the Arc the Lad anime qualifies, as well.

I remember really like Rena voiced by Iizuka Mayumi, that kind of became my definitive voice for the character. So when the PSP version had her voiced by Mizuki Nana, it always felt really off to me. Mizuki and Iizuka have very different voices. Easiest way I can put it is that Mizuki Nana's voice goes really well with tomboys while Iizuka Mayumi's voice goes really well with tsunderes.

The opening theme to Arc the Lad is also something that I can't get out of my head. It was so... orchestral. Also I don't remember just about anything else about it aside from the character's names, but I remember finding the scene with Elk's childhood friend really disturbing.
