These 3 are the same universe and timeline.

http://www.crunchyroll.com/digimon-adventure
http://www.crunchyroll.com/digimon-adventure-02
http://www.crunchyroll.com/digimon-adventure-tri

Also there are movies which Crunchyroll does not have that are also in this timeline so hopefully crunchyroll will acquire them.

The rest of the seasons are each their own universe/timeline.

Adventure and Adventure 02 take place in the same universe with a few years in between. Tri most likely takes place in the same universe as well, but the ending to 02 is probably not cannon anymore if this is true (I haven't watched the latest Tri movie yet so I don't know if this is still true). The rest of the series takes place in different universes independent of each other. Although Xros Wars had a brief crossover at the end that brought all the past main characters together.

The first two seasons of Digimon, plus Tri, are part of the same timeline. Every other season of Digimon exists in its own standalone universe. Although, from time to time, certain characters from earlier seasons of Digimon have been known to cross dimensions and end up in the universe of an entirely unrelated season.

But since you wanted know how everything fits together. It's basically like this:

Season One (Digimon Adventure): Set in 1999.

Season Two (Digimon Adventure 02): Set in 2002.

Season Three (Digimon Tamers): Standalone season, with two characters from the Adventure universe appearing later.

Season Four (Digimon Frontier): Standalone season.

Digimon Data Squad (Digimon Savers): Standalone season.

Digimon Fusion (Digimon Xros Wars): Standalone Season, massive cross-over event towards the end featuring characters from every previous season of Digimon traveling to the same universe.

Digimon Adventure Tri: Set in 2005, part of the Adventure universe.

It is weird how he has a cameo appearance in the Adventure universe and a major role in Tamers. Maybe the writers just decided they liked Ryo for whatever reason and wanted to put him everywhere. From what I recall, he was just a nameless character in Adventurer. He didn't become an actual character until Tamers, unless there was some other appearance before that that I'm not aware of.

Ryo was originally the protagonist of the first few Digimon games on the Bandai WonderSwan, a relatively obscure series of handheld console that never saw release outside of Japan. This means that Ryo would appear in contemporary Digimon media, alongside the games; it just wasn't until Digimon Tamers that he had a major anime appearance.

As for how all of this is possible...

Well, the important thing to understand is that a common theme in many Digimon media is that it's possible (albeit extremely difficult) to travel to parallel dimensions. I mean, the Physical World and Digital World already exist as parallel dimensions, intricately linked. It's just under certain circumstances; characters in one Digimon universe can travel to another Digimon universe, with their own unique versions of the Physical World and the Digital World.

As for how Ryo and Cyberdramon can travel between dimensions... Well, that's never been revealed. In the early days (the WonderSwan games) Ryo was battling against Millenniummon, a powerful mega level Digimon that can warp space and time. Perhaps during these battles Ryo discovered something fundamental about the nature of parallel dimensions and can now travel freely between them but that's just speculation on my part.

I have theories about how dimensional travel in digimon works.
I theorized there is a Digital World that connects to other Digital Worlds like the Grand Central Station of dimension travel. (Long shot)
I theorized there is a unique dimensional code in the Digital World that allows that.

In Digimon Tamers it is implied that the Digimon Adventure anime exist in that universe. My theory is that the creators in that universe thought they were creating fiction are probably reading a psychic memory of the events in the Adventure universe, my guess it that the memory was triggered when the creators saw the digimon on their computer screens or anything else digital. I based my theory on the two-part Justice League episode "Legends" I watched.
