Reviewing my reviews, at least half of them are 3 stars or less - but I agree with the main point here. Most people watch anime they think they are going to like and either they like it, and give it a good review, or they think it is mediocre and move on. Very rarely do they watch anime (particularly all the way through) that they dislike.

Besides, almost everything has some good points, if you look long enough and think about who the intended audience is.

At the end of the day, reviewing is highly subjective. I find with reviews, it is best to find someone (or a site) where they have reviewed stuff you already know and if you agree (mostly) with their assessments of the anime than you can usually trust their judgement on new anime before venturing in.

Being honest 80% of anime on this website is what I would consider 2 star level. Yet almost every show is sitting at 4.5 or higher in terms of rating. Why is there such a lack of negative reviews?

This is a matter of YOUR opinion. Your tastes are not the tastes of everyone else.

That's not them being generous it's you being a negative cynical ass.

Although crudely stated, I somewhat agree with this sentiment.

How does me not finding every anime to be a perfect 5/5 make me an ass exactly?

The complaining about other people liking when you don't and still assuming they agree with you and are just being generous.

This sentiment is much more in line with my feelings.

I see your point, & I have a hypothesis.

People only write reviews on Anime that they LOVE, or Anime that they HATE.

Think about it.

If an Anime is just "Meh", most people wont want to put the time, & effort into writing a review for it.

To be honest, it's the same for me. Most of my reviews are either made, because I loved it, or because I thought it was whack & wanted to spare the poor soul who thought that it was gonna be good Anim-

A bad hour or so of watching anime is better than a good hour spent at work. Thus, I am probably one of those doling out the 4 and 5 stars, readily.

I think there is a certain validity to this, considering half of MAL reviews are negative reviews compared to this site. Why the large gulf? It's extremely rare to see negative reviews. For example, if I pull down NGNL, I'd see around half the views turning out to be negative, although quite a high score, while every is giving 5 Stars to NGNL on CR. Same for every "popular" anime. Now who's being the sheep and circle jerking, MAL or Crunchyroll?

Another thing of note is, there are far more likes on MAL than on CR. I mean, look at this.

Most reviews aren't even meant to be "good" reviews on CR, unlike MAL, where it is sort of a competition, they're just meant to leave a pseudo like on an anime.

I just don't use (or even bother to look at) the CR ratings at all. Since nearly everything here is 4.5 stars or higher, the score loses any meaning as a basis of comparison.

I have a bit more faith in the score an anime has on a certain anime database site. Average there seems to be around 6 (out of 10), so if an anime has an 8 or higher score there's a decent chance I'll find it noteworthy. I'm not sure if giving their name is kosher on CR.. While they don't share / provide fansubs directly, they do list the names of any groups that are subbing an anime on its page.

To give an example, KONOSUBA is (in my opinion) a fairly run-of-the-mill show. Enjoyable for a few laughs, but not great. CR rating: 4.5 / 5; database rating: 6.16 / 10.

Well, of course. I was trying to make it fairly obvious what site I meant without being completely explicit. I'm not familiar enough with the CR moderators to know what the official stance on that site is. I just know a link to or mention of fansubbers is supposed to be an express-ticket to ban town.

I think CR reviews are given by real people who are giving a review about a show that they really liked, or really hated. CR anime fans are anime fans, not professional reviewers. The fan is telling you how much they loved or how much they hated a show.

I go by how many people loved a show, or how many people hated a show. If I do that, I get an idea about how much fun a show is to watch. If you want a professional review, to to ANN and read one of their articles. If you want to know how the fans reacted to a show, then read their reactions.

A professional reviewer is critiquing a show based on technical issues. A fan is reviewing a show based on how much he liked it.

do you take the time to watch and review things you dont like ? no

I tend to personally review shows I liked and stayed with to the end. If I don't like a show, I'll end up watching only a few episodes and not even bother with a review. Same with films, music, literature- etc. Also have this weird view of the subject matter being completely subjective to my interests. Don't feel I'm deserving to reason why I dislike what others may enjoy, in that regard. Although I don't necessarily bother reading reviews all that much either. I've happened to enjoy things people had been known to put down. That's just me anyway.

Why? Well it's funny because most of the animes I have reviewed I gave 5 stars, and I actually give a good review, I don't just say it was good. Some of my 4 star reviews I really get Cynical and critical, and my low 2 stars, not going to name the specific anime "cough"! Testament of sister new devil, I begin to run it straight into the ground while I simultaneously bang my head off a wall for actually going through with watching it.

I say that any anime that are 4.2 - 4.5 it's what I call an average anime, because the majority of people level out the actual 3.9 or 4 with 5 star ratings. Don't trust any review. For me personally, I just go in blind, and I have usually been very good with my anime choices. I have 41 reviews, and pretty much all of them are 5 stars. 3 at 4 stars and 1 at 2 stars. Most of my reviews actually go into detail with a 5 star rating, and I feel that it is justified. If they actually had something like a 4.5 star rating, a lot of my reviews would be leaning towards that.

Ratings reflect opinions of those who feel the need to leave their thoughts on the topic at hand. That being said, that's a very small portion of the people who simply watch the anime and move along to the next.

Take ratings with a grain of salt.
