I gave up on CR's review system ages ago. Its probably a sort of self fulfilling prophecy at this point. People looking to the reviews for genuine feedback on a show get disillusioned by the disparity and then don't participate in the review system. Leaving the review system mostly to each show's given fanbase. Regardless of how good or bad the show itself really is. The fanbase of the show will always buoy the most positive/funny comments to the top on a given episode. So comments don't help either.

If there's one thing I've learned from episode comments its that it doesn't matter how utterly shit a show is there is at least some people on the site that are inexplicably excited by it. Conversely no matter how good a show is there are some people that loath it. The problem is that the former seem to tend to use the comment/review system and the latter seem to tend to use the forums. -.-

Most people only review an anime if they really liked it or really hated it. Not too many go in depth and assign an actual rating unless it was overly negative or overly positive (1 or 5 star).

I don't think I've ever bothered to read users reviews and I pretty much ignore the star ratings. It's easier to watch an episode or episodes and decide for myself.

Being honest 80% of anime on this website is what I would consider 2 star level. Yet almost every show is sitting at 4.5 or higher in terms of rating. Why is there such a lack of negative reviews?

Happens with movies and anything. Don't take them at face value.

I mean it depends, man. Ain't it all opinion? What would you example of a 4-5 star anime be anyway?

No anime I've seen has deserved a true 5/5 (meaning "perfect") in my opinion. The closes I would say is Great Teacher Onizuka. 4.5 for the sub 4.75 for the dub. I think it's a fantastic anime and the localization honestly made it better than the original. The only thing preventing it from being a 5 is the unsatisfying ending.

But that's completely subjective. Lots of people will give their cartoons a 5/5 because anime is always perfect and superior to your gaijin media baka

I can agree to that, as far as anime goes I don't think I have seen a 5/5 anime as the best ones I've seen was Akira, Samurai Champloo, Yu Yu Hakusho, and Samurai 7 but neither of them are 5/5. But I have read material that is 5/5 mainly visual novels like Umineko No Naku Koro Ni.

People watch what they like and end up giving it a high review. Those same people probably rarely watch something that they wouldn't initially have interest in, which probably explains the lack of negative reviews.

I'll agree with this. I usually only end up making reviews for shows I find exceptional. Usually.

Personally, I only review stuff I think is good. I doubt the majority of people on here (or any anime reviewers) actually bother watching an entire series to form an opinion on it.

I believe it's like a youtube video. If you liked it, you click the like button. If you didn't, just leave it alone and move on, most don't bother disliking the video. That's probably exactly what's on CR.

I'm glad reviews on CR aren't as ridiculous as MAL reviews. Watching 5 out of 24 episodes and reviewing it as if they knew the entire story and watched it.

That's not them being generous it's you being a negative cynical ass.

How does me not finding every anime to be a perfect 5/5 make me an ass exactly?

Everything has a different rating for different viewers unless it is absolute shit tier.

People tend to watch things they want to watch and not subject themselves to things they don't want to. If they are watching something they are already inclined to watch, that is if they are the show's target demographic, they will naturally like it more and rate it higher.

Let' take me for example. If I see a show I think will be a real stinker I just don't watch it. I have more important things to do with my time than watch something that I just know is gonna suck. For example, Love Stage!!. I'm not anywhere near that. I'm sure it has its fans out there where that show hits their sweet spot, but it's not mine. Likewise I watched Magical Warfare because I am a sucker for fantasy/supernatural action shows. And it suuuuuucked. I didn't think it deserved a review, but I did one to two star the episodes.

I personally break down the rating system as follows:
3 stars - average. The majority of shows fall in this range.
4 stars - above average.
5 stars - outstanding.
2 stars - below average.
1 star - pretty much garbage.

And I evaluate a show based on: writing, pacing, characters and character development, music, design, art, animation consistency, originality, and feel.

Most users probably rate up because they like a show. There's your answer.

BTW, I agree with the people who say there are a bunch of quality shows on CR.

Some examples of shows as I'd rate them:

Bleach - 3
Mekakucity Actors - 5
The Saga of Tanya the Evil - 4
Berserk - 4
Fairytail - 3
Space Patrol Luluco - 3
One Piece - 3
The Ancient Magus' Bride - 5

I personally rate the shows in a like/dislike basis, i doubt many folks are trying to be professional reviewers.
