Is it a bad thing when you get kicked out of the goth crowd for being too depressing?

I guess being goth is just one way of expressing yourself but wouldn't it be easier to.....you know actually express yourself? To talk to people and let them know who you are and how you're feeling? I know it doesn't look as cool as wearing black leather and studded dog collars and all but it's cheaper and an easier way to show the world who you really are. The ONLY problem I have with any fad like that is that people who claim to be (insert your fad of choice) all say they look and act that way to express themselves and to be unique.....but they all dress and act the exact same way (with minor details varying) so it's more of a herd than a collection of separate individuals all expressing their individuality. Just seems counterproductive to me.

Now I'm not one to talk or judge though. I was young, had really long Pink hair. Yeah I'm a guy, the freaking bottle said Rose red though and my friend did it for me......she was a girl with a pinkish tint to part of her hair so I should have known better. But on the plus size I got really good tips while delivering pizza with pink hair. All the ladies loved it and wanted to know where I got that color at so I made good money.

To me it's more of a "Hey, look at me." type thing than it is a way to express your uniqueness or individuality. It's so odd too because a lot of people who do that are introverts and really don't want the extra attention. I didn't, that's for sure yet there I was with long pink hair. Not exactly a good way to go incognito. Some times it just seems like a cry for help to me. A way to say to the world, look at me. I'm here and I want to be accepted for who I am. I am more than what you see and are you good enough to see past all of this or not? I want someone to care, to say hi and to maybe, just maybe to help me. Mainly I just want to belong to something, somewhere and don't like being alone all the time even though I like being alone all the time. I would like to get in touch with my feelings but sometimes it's too much, sometimes it's too confusing or too painful so I choose to do this instead.

That's just my take on it and I could be completely wrong. I'd love to hear from someone who was heavily into the goth scene when they were younger or are still into it.

Of course some may do it just to be in that crowd but most of the time I think it's a cry for help and to be noticed, even if it's just on a subconscious level. Looking back at my past I can definitely say that's what was going on with me.....even if I didn't realize it back then.

I always think of architecture whenever I hear the word goth or gothic. Love me some gothic architecture. Vaulted ceilings are sexy.

Yes it's a way to express yourself but that's what clothing for example always is (as long as you're not poor and you can afford to choose what to wear). It's actually just a melting pot for the unusual who prefer the darker things in life. But that's it and it can mean anything. That's why there are so many different kinds of goth and that's most likely the reason why so many goths grow old with it. There are no strict rules how to dress, what to think or wich music you have to like. Some older goths are constantly complaining about that, because it was much better "in the good old days" . But actually the subculture just grew and they now have to deal with more kinds of goth then 20 years ago. Even 20 years ago not everybody looked Robert Smith. Since the beginning there are different goth-types, they should finally accept it .
Of course there are people who just want the attention but the majority don't. It's not even about being different it's just a way to live your life or to be yourself.

I'm no goth, but I do see the dark side of life. War, crime, discrimination, drug addiction and the list goes on about how dark things are in life, which is not innocent.

It's about the dark things not the destructive ones.

Darkness is more than absence of light, it's something that you feel. I studied Edgar Allan Poe's short stories and I know what darkness is.
