I have no idea on how to do this on a MAC, so I suggest that you go to the computer's manuals respectively.

WindowXP and below: (You need the service pack 2 CD that most likely came with your computer.)

Go to start
Settings
Control Panel
Regional and Language Options
Language Tab
Details
Click Add
Scroll Down to Japanese in Input Languages
Press Ok
Click on Language Bar
Make sure "Show the language bar on the desktop" is checked.
Press OK
Go to the "advanced" tab
Check "Extend support of advanced text services to all programs"
Press OK

IN VISTA:

>>go to start
>>open control panel
>>go to clock, language and region
>>go to regional and Language options
(press changekeyboards or other input methods
>>press change keyboard
>>press "add" and... voila'!

you got the katakanas down, now try switching over to hiragana

If you type something and press space, it turns it into kanji.
If you press space again, it gives you a list of other kanjis it can be.

try typing "nihon" and press space.

hmm... i've never tried a vista before, but i would guess that a rectangle is visible with another box inside that says "EN" right? You click on that, switch it to "JP" (for japanese) and click on the "A" that appears and switch it over to hiragana.
