I have no idea on how to do this on a MAC, so I suggest that you go to the computer's manuals respectively.

WindowXP and below: (You need the service pack 2 CD that most likely came with your computer.)

Go to start
Settings
Control Panel
Regional and Language Options
Language Tab
Details
Click Add
Scroll Down to Japanese in Input Languages
Press Ok
Click on Language Bar
Make sure "Show the language bar on the desktop" is checked.
Press OK
Go to the "advanced" tab
Check "Extend support of advanced text services to all programs"
Press OK

IN VISTA:

>>go to start
>>open control panel
>>go to clock, language and region
>>go to regional and Language options
(press changekeyboards or other input methods
>>press change keyboard
>>press "add" and... voila'!
~thank you for submitting this in toiletcat27

for those of you on windows xp and without a cd i think i found a way to help you add the japanese to the list cuz i myself did not have it on the list, i dont know if i got the cd or not but if you go

control panel>>Regional and language options>>Languages

on this page you should see two sections one called (Text services and input languages) the other called (Supplemental language support). Under the second one it says "most languages are installed by default. To install additional languages, selecf the appropriate check box below." There should be two check boxes to select, the second one is the one you want to check called "install files for East Asian languages"

then a pop-up will come up saying how after you hit ok it will install, so just hit ok, it will install and ask for a restart of your computer, after restarting i found more languages installed :]

hope this helps

-also if anyone can explain exactly how they can write in hiragana cuz right now i can only do katakana-

nah..you still have to have the oem(THE CD)..because the OS is looking for it in the default i386 folder in your OEM... if it is in your OS then theres no reason to go look and it will be in the options without doin any hassle. because there is no way an OS can create a file without any resources..that defies the computing process and the norm itself..i did your instruction step by step but still asked me to get the OEM

guys if you're looking for it then try going to microsoft website and go to "support and downloads"-like section. there is also a program you can get in microsoft named CLIP that when you typed in english it will translate what you typed in to different languages and help you how to pronounced it.. (BUT ALWAYS NO TRANSLATION PROGRAMS ARE ACCURATE) even google
