I'm torn between two, but they're both from the same game - The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

The first is Arch-Mage Hannibal Traven. The man took a strong stance against necromancy on moral grounds and led the guild with both a firm hand and a gentle heart. I won't spoil the end of the questline, but i'll say that I grew to really respect that old mage for the depth of his convictions and dedication to the guild.

The second, who I like for complete opposite reasons, is Mankar Camoran, leader of the Mythic Dawn. Although he is evil, and perhaps a bit insane, the truth is that he was massively charismatic. When I listened to his echoing voice in Paradise, he almost managed to convince me he was right. By the time I made my way to his throne to challenge him, I half wondered if my true destiny was to lose to him. He was even wearing the Amulet of Kings for gods' sake!. He's just that convincing, the hallmark of an effective cult leader, I suppose. Add to that his accomplishments of managing to assassinate the Emperor and his sons, of not only receiving but understanding and commenting on the tome of Daedric knowledge that is the Mysterium Xarxes, and constructing his own magical Paradise which I can only assume is like his own little plane of Oblivion, and you have what appears to be quite a powerful mage.

Ultimately, if I had to pick, I'd probably go with Traven since he isn't evil, even though I found Camoran more impressive.

Lots of good ones already mentioned and I don't know if he would really be my favorite but I've always liked Raistlin Majere.

I like a lot of mages. I can't really pick just one so I will just list a few in no particular order.
Gandalf from Lord of the Rings
How can you dislike him? Plus you shall not pass never gets old. Though I admit to never reading the books.
Merlin from Arthurian mythology but specifically for me the Once and Future King (Book by T.H White)
Merlin is just such a cool dude with his living backwards and stuff. It was really interesting how Merlin worked. Plus he was great for divining and such.
Ricken from Fire Emblem: Awakening
I have no idea why but I really like Ricken. There is just something awesome about him.
Henry from Fire Emblem: Awakening
This dude is crazy and I love it. He is also really funny, especially in the English version. In the Japanese version he is great too though less crazy and pun happy.
