Digimon Adventure tri is a return to the Digital World that some of us have been waiting for for years... well, soon enough. Reunion, the first movie/set of four episodes in the series, is actually more of a character introspective that takes place in the regular world, but there's still plenty of the Digimon and DigiDestined we love, along with some new reasons to fight and save the world.

Reunion definitely has a focus on Taichi, and the unease he's felt in the years since he was actively fighting as a DigiDestined. He has to face the real world challenges of being towards the end of high school; filling out his career form (all he knows is he wishes he was with Agumon and his other Digimon friends again), trying to balance spending time with friends and accepting that they have their own lives, too, and just growing up in general. There's a quick scene of the 02 DigiDestined in the first part of the film, too, which shows them getting defeated... maybe fighting with the Digimon is more problematic than Taichi would've expected.

Things get turned even more upside down when Kuwagamon appears in Odaiba, destroying the city and disrupting electrical signals. His appearance drags up these feelings of wanting Agumon around even more, along with reinforcing the helplessness and insecurity that Taichi is already feeling. Even as Agumon appears after all these years and is sent in to fight, Taichi is scared; he's aware of what the Digimon fighting does to the city now, in a way he could never be when he was a child. He sees what is happening the the roads and buildings, and the fear of the people in the city.

When Greymon and Kuwagamon fight, they get pushed through a pixelated, digital barrier, transporting them to a nearby airport. Taichi stands at a loss, unsure how to reach them and help. His teacher at school, Daigo Nishijima, suddenly comes by in a car to drive him. It's revealed that, now, the government has more of a hand in the knowledge of Digimon than ever before. Nishijima is an agent himself, and many others arrive to bring the rest of our DigiDestined (except for Joe), to the airport with their own Digimon, to aide in the fight as well. (It's likely that the government has been keeping an eye on the DigiDestined since the original fight, but it's interesting to note that there's a screen where the names of the 02 DigiDestined are seen, as well, showing that they're also on the radar. Considering the earlier scene with them, why are they not getting some sort of help?)

Taichi continues to be distressed, even moreso after he sees the damage at the airport. This causes a rift between him and Yamato, who feels like the public is treating the Digimon, their friends, “like the enemy”, after the incident. Yamato thinks Taichi is a coward, and doesn't understand what he's trying to run away from. They're the only ones who can save the world, right? They've done it before, so why wouldn't they be able to do it again? Taichi is still trapped in his own head; knowing on one hand that Yamato is right, and on the other still too frightened of what can happen. Meanwhile, Koushiro is explaining that the gate to the Digital World has been cut off for a year. Their Digivices were malfunctioning, and electrical signals and blackouts occurred. Space became distorted, which created a connection to the real world that wasn't organic, like the way they originally got there. This is how the Digimon were able to come back into the real world.

The boys' meet with their teacher, and he explains to them in more detail the government involvement with the Digimon and DigiDestined. The government was taking out smaller Digimon, but now with more major ones appearing, they need the DigiDestined's help. It's revealed that Gennai, who once helped the original DigiDestined, gave information to the government. Nishijima also explains that the Digimon appearing are “infected”. There is an unknown force controlling them, and for now, no one knows who or what it is, or what to do about it.

Koshiro creates a cyberspace for their Digimon to escape to; they can communicate through text and monitors, but it keeps their Digimon safe... theoretically, anyway. He also creates a pair of goggles for Taichi to use so he can see the space distortions. Red, he explains, are related to the distortions they've been seeing and, in turn, the infected Digimon. They DigiDestined all go out together, trying to find any sources of a fight before it happens. While out, they run into Meiko Mochizuki, a girl whose appeared throughout the film, and transferred into their school. She's looking for a cat, she says, and Sora and Mimi agree to help her; why not, they're looking for something anyway.

Taichi and Yamato are forced into a ferris wheel ride together. While they debate things, Taichi tries on his goggles, and sees a huge red mass opening up to the sky. A Digimon appears, Alphamon, who starts destroying the park around him. Meiko runs to her “cat”, Mei-chan, a new Digimon, who Alphamon is apparently after. The rest of the DigiDestined show up, but their attacks aren't working. Yamato knows Omegamon is the only way to fight Alphamon, and Taichi needs to step up for them to win.

He does, and they manage to get Alphamon to escape, but it's not over yet. They stand at a loss, unsure of what happens next. Meiko reveals her cat is Meicoomon, her partner Digimon, and that's she's a DigiDestined as well. After the credits, Taichi stands staring out at the broken cityscape, while Yamato asks him if he knows what he's going to do. Taichi doesn't give him an answer.

What will happen to our DigiDestined next? Will they find a way to defeat the infected Digimon? Will they be able to grow into their own and be accepting of themselves and the things that are happening? You can find out right now in the next part of Digimon Adventure tri: Determination!

Hm, this is weird. I've read your other reviews, but unless I'm missing something, isn't this more of an elaborate synopsis/summary of the plot than a review?
