Laptop I went through 2 hard drives in 3 years.

My desktop is 8 years old I upgraded the CPU, Motherboard, OS, RAM and added a SSD all last month and am still using an 8 year old Video Card, DVD Drive, Case, Power Supply, Hard drive although its my secondary now and Fan.

How an 8 year old video card is still running these games on high graphics is blowing my mind and saving me $350.

In my house the oldest computer still in service is eh, 13 years old I think. It's my linux box. It was my primary desktop for about five years, running Windows 2000 and later Windows XP, before it was replaced by a newer machine and relegated to life as a file/dns/ssh server.

Computer has lasted like 4 years now? Still runs fine.

Laptops are a different story.. all my older laptops still were okay past 3 years, but were just obsolete by then.

Mid priced laptops now seem to be built much more shoddy, and my most recent one is being a jackass in some regards after a year and a half.

A high end gaming laptop, 1.5 years and going strong (i7-4700HQ, GTX 780M... Newer systems with the GTM 970M is faster and costs less)
An AMD C-60 Netbook, 3 years later, with 8GB of ram, the CPU is so slow websites take a long time to load.. somehow still runs League of Legends and Minecraft.
My PC towers, AMD X2 4600+ ran for 8 years, struck by lightning and blew up,
Tower rebuilt, Intel I5 2500 ran for 3 years going strong.
Oldest living system.. Pentium 3 1GHz from 2001 to 2013 before being replaced(didn't break)

I've never really had a PC break on me. I do eventually get rid of them for being obsolete, but I tend to keep them around far, far longer than most people would. The oldest computer I still use is a 2006 win xp emachine with like 25,000 hours of power on time or something. Still runs like the day I got it- use it now for emulators and stuff.

What's the average life expectancy for a computer/laptop. No limits on the answers. If you have any experience post it.

Anywhere from 1 second to all eternity. There are computers that have been going since the 80's without ever needing any repairs. On the other hand there are brand new pc's that are DOA. If I had to guess I would say the average life span of a computer is around 4 years. Normally you need to upgrade at least every 4 to 5 years or your pc starts getting left way behind.

Now with that said all my computers I've ever owned still run except one. The HD went out on that one after about maybe 6-7 years of owning it. The rest still work even though I don't use them. I have a garage full of huge tower computers that came out of a school in the early 90's that I plan on messing with soon. They all still run but are super old. Most of them have the old floppy discs but a few of them have the harder floppies.

My track record has been about 3 years - usually even if the notebook still works - here are my most common reasons personally to justify for getting a "new" one:

1. I want a faster processor
2. I want better screen resolution
3. I want lighter, more portable solution or I need a different screen size

Right now I mainly work on a Yoga (Lenovo) 2 pro - that I really like as an all-three things better than my prior HP Spectre notebook.

Not to mention some may choose to get a new one for touch-screen or other features that their old one didn't have

Oh one tip here: Definitely keep liquids including watery cleaners away from your keyboard - they definitely don't like the moisture (or so says yet another HP I was a little rough on)

Less than a year. It had a dedicated Radeon graphics chip. The Radeon graphics chip was glued with thermal adhesive to the heatsink. The glue melted, and the gpu separated from the heatsink. I used it primarily to play World of Warcraft while I was driving trucks cross country (while stopped at truck stops). I had it re-glued, but that only lasted a week, and the gpu separated from the heatsink again.

My desktop has lasted around 5 years (ish) now. It's a bit of a Theseus' ship kinda situation though, I've upgraded almost all the components bar the motherboard at least once since I bought it.

I have a terrible habit of buying new laptops when I really don't need them but most of them usually last a few years. My old Macbook I got second hand ended up lasting around 8 years I think. Might even still be working, I gave it away though.

As long as you're careful and take care of them they can last for a long while, assuming you don't just get unlucky
