My friends 16 year old daughter called up a Uber to go to a mall last December. Before she got out the car, the driver who was in his late 40's told the girl that he would call her sometime, and she better answer his phone call as he knows where she lives now. She told her father who is ex military. He pulled up the drivers profile picture and some other data from Uber, and was going to track him down. I convinced him report it to Uber and report it to whomever instead of snapping the Uber drivers neck.

They reported it and the guys profile vanished from Uber. Assuming he got fired.

I've used Uber Black a few times. I am not a cute female so I've never had any issue. But it is always best to be cautious in any strangers car.

Then you also have former Taco Bell marketing executive drunkenly attacking a Uber driver. Skip to 2:30 to see the attacking begin.

some cabs are just as sketchy as uber. i mean anyone can start a cab company.. uber is basically just paid hitchhiking. and for that reason I love it. So much interesting.

also, über is going to get rid of their human drivers for these reasons and use self-driving cars:

Doesn't make a difference. If they try to grope you, jam a screwdriver in their eye.

Hmm, Uber is great way to make extra income for drivers as well as make it affordable for those who don't have cars to be mobile not to mention compete with the overly high priced cab companies presently operating in cities and other countries. It's not the company's fault it's the drivers obviously. Even if they go through a thorough back ground check you never know when someone will snap and rape/assualt/kill someone. Yep, there's a lot of serious mental problemed folks out there. Perhaps some security should be provided by the company like a video camera or some sort of emergency button in the app for the passengers when the driver goes down the deep end. I"m sure there are better methods but I really don't care to list them all here.

I don't know that it's any less safe than taxis etc, so yeah probably if I was looking for a ride and didn't want to or couldn't drive myself. The media can skewing ones perception of a problem. As a counter point:

When I last traveled (about a year and a half ago), I used Lyft. At the time, the app had a higher rating than Uber in the Google Play store. And the pink mustaches on the cars were cute. While I doubt that any company can fully screen out all bad people, I've had good experience with them. I'd rather avoid Uber if at all possible. Not so much because of these freak incidents, moreso because of the vile things I've read about Uber's anti-competitive behavior.
