So Uber is basically a taxi service utilizing contractor drivers?

I'm not especially concerned about a driver might do, however they should be concerned what might happen if they tried anything.

I've never had a problem with Uber so far. Very convenient, especially since I live in a city with no car, and pretty reasonably priced. Most of the drivers are super-friendly too, and will talk to you on the way to your destination.

There's a similar reason why I refuse to drive a cab.
especially at night.
It's not the driver, it's the trapped in a moving vehicle with a stranger.

I've never used it and don't plan to. I've already had trouble with a regular taxi driver when I was a teen. After that I decided it was best to walk the last mile to school rather than use taxis and stick to public transport (buses) for the rest of my journey. Unfortunately then I had to deal with a stalker. I also recall a friend telling me that a girl came to school with a blood on her skirt. She'd just been raped on her taxi ride to school. There's unscrupulous taxi drivers no matter how they're organised or regulated. There were also some rural areas that had only unregistered taxis in evenings because the regular ones refused to work those hours and there was no public transport there.

Nope. Uber has joined my list of things I avoid like the plague. I know they Uber does backgrounds checks and all that but how hard would it be for just anyone to pretend they're an uber driver and hurt people? Plus there's just been one too many stories. It's a bit like Craigslist and unfortunately a few bad apples have ruined it for everyone else. One story is one story too many and I'd rather not become the latest Uber statistic or Craigslist victim so I just refuse to use either one of them.

With that said I really like the idea behind Uber. If they can ever get it to a point where everyone trusts them then I'd be glad to use them but for now I'll avoid. They still have a lot of growing and learning to do and hopefully all of these cases will help them to become a better company with higher standards in safety.
