The first time? Or still to this day?

It took me 2 or 3 times to fully understand everything in Paprika.

I don't really get Owarimonogatori.

Did you watch the other monogatari series' first? The show would be complete nonsense without that context

Bakumonogatori was just as nonsensical.

^This.

Fafner:Exodus

There have been anime where I've been warned to watch the first season before proceeding.... And I've gone and watched them anyway, and always been able to get the gist of it eventually. Most anime are just not that confusing.. they're mainly designed for fairly young audiences after all, and I've never had a problem. Sometimes going back and watching the first season is more enjoyable because it's like watching a prequel.

But with Fafner, after 25 episodes I still had almost no clue what was going on didn't remember half the names (and today can't remember a single one) and I think the only reason why I watched is because I found the show beautiful. From characters to scenery- and still do, but can't tell you a thing about the story.

Also, I think I understand bits and pieces of DURARA! And I really enjoy the series but can anybody explain to me the overarching theme behind it. Each episode seems in some ways independent from the others. Is it just me?

I think Durarara! is more of a shaggy dog story than anything, really. I'm not entirely sure it was even trying to have a point.

The Melancholy of Haruki Suzumiya

I mean, the show is purposely out of order,. Many people watch it twice, just to understand the real story.

Speaking of watching the same thing over and over again... When I picked up this series, I actually started in Season 2 by accident. I watched the whole season, including every Endless Eight episode, before realizing my mistake. I really didn't get why it was popular. I didn't know who anyone was. People told me I probably wouldn't know what was going on, so I just accepted that I would be confused and tried my best to "get it."

Then I watched the first season...

I don't remember exactly, but I do believe that humanity disturbed those golden alien things on Pluto and then they came and invaded earth and started killing people. There are different factions of them though, some that are friendly.

The rest of the world outside of the main character's island is kind of impoverished and war torn. The island is pretty much all that is left of Japan and they fight to protect it from both invading foreign countries and the golden aliens.

It's a bit of a difficult story to follow, but the main theme is survival.

The one that instantly comes into my head is '(The) Soultaker', it's this weird-ass avant garde anime from 2001 (iirc) that tries way too hard to be edgy and intellectual, and it just sort of... didn't pull it off

I will admit that after barely understanding the first episode and finding it... less than enjoyable, I watched the rest of it whilst doing other things (e.g. browsing amazon or facebook in another window), but even so, I swear the plot makes hardly any sense

Also I guess there were parts of Durarara!!x2 I didn't get, solely because of how large the cast has gotten now... there are several characters that I just don't remember who they are, or at least how they're connected with the other characters, or how they were first introduced etc. (e.g. Aoba's brother, it took me a long while to remember who he was when x2 Ten started)

Also, Deadman Wonderland never made much since to me. I enjoyed watching and understood the basic plot but that's about it.
