Clarification:

The Cavendish banana, the most common banana, is seeing dramatic declines in production. This is due to disease intensified by every Cavendish banana tree basically being a clone of a tree grown in a Devonshire, England greenhouse in the 1830's. This lack of genetic diversity is preventing the development of disease resistant strains. This isn't the first time something like this has occurred. Until the 1950's the Gros Michel banana was the most common but nowadays disease has reduced its cultivation to a few areas.

Fun fact: artificial banana flavor is based on the Gros Michel banana which is why artificial banana flavor is so different from the store bought Cavendish banana.
