The Imperials because the Stormcloaks are a) a bunch of racist asholes and b) about as stupid as the proverbial post . They also suck at intelligence gathering since they fail to realise the civil war is exactly what the Aldmeri Dominion wants . They want a weakened and divided human race. And they also fail to realise the Empire is as miffed about the banning of Talos worship as Skyrim Is. Talos is the divine version of their finest Emperor after all . I mean shit a few random conversations and some digging and the Dragonborn finds this out on their own, what the fuck is the Stormcloaks excuse for being that stupid?

I sided with the Imperials, but upon playing the game more, I actually like the Stormcloaks better.

I sided with both on two playthroughs. The Stormcloaks were pretty fun though.

If i understand the lore of it correctly... Skyrim is set in the 4th era year 201...
the 3rd Era ended when the last descendant of Tiber Septim/Talos(Martin Septim) died...
Tiber Septim conquered Tamriel and founded the Septim Empire or the "Third Empire"
Tiber Septim was Dragonborn... and all of his descendants were also technically Dragonborn or at least had the "blood of the dragon"/blood worthy of being emperor.

Seeing how the protagonist of Skyrim is also Dragonborn... wouldn't this technically mean that he/she has a better claim to the Imperial throne than the current emperor Titus Mede II(if you don't assassinate him) or any other claimant for the throne the last two centuries...
This is just me guessing, but I'm pretty sure that the majority of the people of Cyrodiil would support someone with the "blood of the dragon" sitting on the imperial throne... which means that by siding with the Imperials you might eventually become Emperor...

the biggest threat before being able to do this would be to defeat/destroy the Thalmor who ultimately are probably plotting to put an elf on the throne and creating the "Aldmeri Empire" or something like that...

although by siding with Stormcloaks, perhaps you could challenge Ulfric to a duel and claim the title of High King... would be kind of funny if you as an argonian, khajiit, dark elf etc... became High King of Nords... considering they are barely allowed within city walls... even if the right to challenge possibly is a nord-only thing they might make an exception for the dragonborn...

As a firm supporter of the British monarchy I kinda felt drawn to the Imperials. It just felt right to support the established ruler

I say join the Stormcloaks, and here's a very long explanation of why involving appeals to both in-game events and the lore set out between Oblivion and Skyrim:

Also, everyone in Tamriel is racist. In the world of The Elder Scrolls racism is pervasive. Khajiit are considered drug addled thieves for being Khajiit, Orcs are considered primitive meatheads, Altmer are considered self-absorbed snobs, racism is everywhere in that universe. It's not a strike against the Stormcloaks specifically when everyone is a racist.

And where exactly do you get the notion the Imperial Army or the people of Tamriel are at all war weary. None of the Imperial soldiers you encounter in Skyrim even hint at such a thing . Even General Tullius himself shows a distrust of the Thalmor and an outright dislike of the White-Gold Concordat . Furthermore he hints that the next enemy to be taken care of is the Thalmor if you settle the civil war in favour of the Empire.

So I fail to see how anyone could think the Imperial Army is at all war weary. And as for Hammerfall success against the Thalmor you have to remember the Thalmor are themselves still rebuilding and stretched thin. And with Cyrodiil , Hammerfall, and Skyrim to manage they can't commit enough resources in any one place to ensure a successful campaign against Hammerfall.

The path of immediate action only works when you have the kind of resources to maintain an extended and prolonged campaign. Which Skyrim does not have, nor has ever had really. The Empire was founded by a Nord true but the Nord people have never made up the bulk of the Imperial Army . So the Stormcloaks are both short sighted and incapable of even basic strategic thinking . The Thalmor are high elves with a 1000 year life span so they can think in the long term. And furthermore a lot of the Thalmor whatever you think of them have centuries of experience in warfare and strategy. You don't bull rush an enemy like that regardless of whatever recent past means to you.

I went Stormcloaks, the racist thing can be fixed over time I think there would also be points if you were a different race. As for the empire I think the banning of the worship of Talos could be made a permanent thing if the Thalmor stayed in power and even if they weren't in power judging how most of the people felt about Talos they probably wouldn't have removed the ban. Talos is in fact a god from the lore I read so I'd rather be in good graces with him rather than receive some sort divine punishment.

Edit: Plus the Thalmor are bigger Bigots than the Nords. So if the Empire won and the Thalmor were still in control you would get both racism and be told who you are aloud and not aloud to worship.
