I agree that it's not fair to say that the level design is bad. I think it's incredibly intentional and well thought out. Look at some of the newer games like Bloodborne and you'll see this.

OG Dark Souls was definitely harder, but I still never found it as frustrating as Demon's Souls.

To the bolded- Um. That's terrible level design. It's easy to get through Dark Souls as well, considering you know where all the enemies are going to fall on you out of nowhere. Enemies behind corners can even be carefully played out, but putting people in a game where you are meant to survive and then putting mobs in that can attack you because you stood at one part of the room where it spawns on top of you isn't making the game harder. It's just cheapening it's tactics to kill you. Like Kirito said, "The game was a terrible thing to make, but at least it was made fair."(Paraphrased)

I'd prefer the overleveled bosses than the ridiculous level design of Dark Souls.

Nah, it's only because SAO was what it was that the whole "you die when you're killed" development was a thing.


-if the game was Dark Souls-esque, the series would've been a lot different and darker -- instead of "this is like reality", Kayaba or whoever then would've been more interested in a "this is an inescapable nightmare" kind of feel to it.

You know, like "you don't die when you're killed, but you have to experience death endlessly to escape from the game". Instead of cheap feels and dark horse Kirito, it would be filled with psychological tragedies and piece of shit Kirito...
