Post Reply Is being rich good?

if it's given by someone else, like from inheritance, then I wouldn't mind it.

but if I had to become rich on my own, I don't think I can. i'm not finance-savvy, reading about stocks, taxes and whatnot gives me a huge headache.

The best way I've heard it described is that wealth amplifies everything, positive and negative.

Are you materialistic? Now you can buy whatever you want.
Charitable? now you can do so much more.
Cruel? You can do terrible things and get away with it.
Like to party? Now your parties will be insane and never end.
Like to travel? Go anywhere you want any time you want.
Promiscuous? Don't even get me started...
Depressed? Get worse as you realize nothing you buy makes you feel better, and you have nothing to look forward to.
etc.

Wealth removes limits, but sometimes limits are a good.

You left out laziness

Being filthy rich could also mean you could be sleeping all day and just collect on the interest of money sitting in the bank

edit: because that's what I would do

Being rich is good. Financial worries are a leading cause of anxiety and depression. I aspire to be wealthy enough to not have to worry about money and be able to live comfortably.

All I'll say is if anyone offered me a few million pounds then I wouldn't say "no".

If someone is offering you a few million pounds, they are probably asking for a leg or two. Probably some ass too.

I don't see why being rich would inhibit you in any way. If your rich a lot of things open up to you and you can chose to take part in them. Can you buy that really cool house, car, and everything else? Sure, but you can also chose not to if you don't want the problems that could come with those. My Grandparents (I'm told) were incredibly rich but lived in a small house with average everything and they just lived a simple life. They did not get the rich stigma and did not have any of those problems. Apparently the family did not even know they were rich till the will was read. There are no downsides to being rich, only downsides to handling it poorly.
