I have barely used Steam over the last year, I got sick of been over charged for everything, I mostly use GOG for PC games now. Any Triple A games I will just get on Console. I only buy the odd under $5 game now from steam.

I don't trust Valve, and I never have. At least if I buy something off GOG, I know full well what I am paying.

What are people talking about?

I've been buying games on steam for years and their prices are really good, even Steam Sales, this stuff is really affordable.

Or these bad prices are in a different country?

Believe the affected people are in Australia, where games cost more for various reasons.

Like kilaldagren, I haven't used steam in a good while despite having tons of games there. I appreciate many things Valve and Steam have contributed to PC gaming, but I am also sick of their monopolistic practices. For example, no refunds for so many years is a good example of how corporations have the US and the people by the balls. Only after (separate) european and australian consumer laws were being enforced has valve done anything about the issue. I'm also happy to see so many GoG users here, I love how pro-consumer GoG is and it is some well deserved competition for king Gabe.

Have fun paying for the those extra services, cause they are going to pass the cost on to you. Why on earth does a digital service need a P.O box and a 1800 number?

As for liability, tell them to pound sand.

we are already price gouged if anything this will end up with Australians paying less.

no clue why it needs a p.o or 1800 number but they already gouge our prices which will go away hopefully.

Valve doesn't set game prices, though they do have a suggested prices apparently.

I know that but they do have a part in it and letting the price gouging happen a big part in it.

"Various reasons" being an invisible tax due to price gouging.

Not to mention we will soon be getting a real tax over digital goods so not only are we being taxed by our government we are being charged more then we should pay (price gouging) by companies who do it.

There is no valid reason for games costing more then there American counterparts.

GoG would be cool if they had more games and a steam like library to record my playtime but because they don't i don't use it myself

Totally off-topic but people hate Kotaku??

Why?

Because of Gamergate and terrible practices.

This seems to only be prevalent in the American version of Kotaku though.

It not really their job to dictate prices to publishes at all. They'd be better offer going to the publishers themselves then asking Valve to police it. Policing in general is not something Valve likes to do. Green Light is s festering abomination because of their unwillingness.

Cost of living in general is much higher in Australia than in the USA and annual salary tends to be higher to account for this: http://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/compare_countries_result.jsp?country1=United+States&country2=Australia

Australia has a different economic market so it would be unreasonable to act like prices should be identical.

Im looking at the prices and the actual steam store in front of me, the website you've shown me is either not up to date or just lying.

The website says Dynasty Warriors Extreme Legends 8 in Australia is $49.99 and America pays $19.99.

On my screen with the Steam Store however shows Dynasty Warriors Extreme Legends 8 is $49.99.

This is not the only game I've looked at.

Huh it turns out having a borderline monopoly is gonna give you some problems. Glad someones putting valve on the spot.
