The word has become misused to the point that people have started dismissing it as meaningless and therefor have forgotten why it's a bad thing. Being a weeaboo is becoming more acceptable by people who don't understand the term and why it's bad - often considering it just a negative version of the word "otaku" and therefor sticking up for it due to shared culture. Being a weeaboo is still a bad thing and we should remember it's true meaning for when we need to refer to people who are weeaboos. Dismissing the word is like considering people with constructive criticism as "Haters" which is another thing which happens far too often.

The word has been used and twisted so much over the years that I feel it has no barb left. By this stage, every anime fan has been called a weeaboo at some point either in jest or seriously. It has become an inside joke to the community.

It's just about impossible to effectively insult someone with the word any more.

Watching anime doesn't necessarily mean that you're a weeaboo, Japanophile or Wapanese, unless you 1) think negatively and apathetically about western animation, 2) use it to learn Japanese instead of reading books, studying at school or doing homework, 3) never listen to The Beatles or Toto and think the best music comes from Japan and 4) get all upset about dubbing.

It's a 4chan level insult, and just about anyone using it can be safely ignored.

Weeaboo is a stupid word, I know people have called me that because I tried to explain to theme that Anime is an Art style and not a genre.

Also I enjoy Japanese stuff a lot and I literately wont play a game if its too ugly but if its Anime I'll try it, I don't care if people say thats unfair.

im okay with it i could care less

To be honest, up until about a year ago I had never even heard of the term "weeaboo" much less knew what it meant. When I was in High School, nobody used that term and anime was just a hobby some people (like myself and a few of my classmates) were into (and everybody else respected that fact).

Anyways, if someone were to call me a "weeaboo", I would calmly explain why I am not. If however, they continued to call me that, I would turn around and either call them a "hater" or a bigot (because that's what most people who use the term "weeaboo" as an insult are, either "haters" or bigots).

For real? I wouldn't go as far as calling them a bigot. The only people that use the term weeaboo in the first place are other anime fans, or gamer nerds. Personally, I can't stand true weeaboos, but rather than call them out on it, I tend to ignore their obsessiveness and just don't bother with them. They do exist and they make the anime fandom look scary and weird to outsiders. XD

I hate everything about my own culture, only eat Japanese food (ramen noodles) and want to live in Japan forever and ever. wWieeeeeeee" <---- THAT'S A WEEABOO!

Otaku was also popularized with a negative meaning,

Thing is, people have power over language. Otaku took back their word from Nakamori's vile attempts to brand them. I myself embraced the weeaboo term on my friend. Once you become secure in yourself, language loses some of its power to hurt you. My friend is still scared of being anything like a weeb, so I joke he's becoming one any time he comes near anything anime. Since I'm such a proud Otaku and embraced being a weeb, even when I describe things or situations in that regard he is more open to it than before.

Don't fear language or use it to harm unnecessarily. Its just a useful descriptor.

I don't really have an opinion on it. It doesn't garner any negative/positive reaction towards me so meh, use it all you want I say. Isn't going to bother me one bit.

Some people just go too far into Japanese culture from anime and manga and think that Japan is similar to it. Those guys can be annoying and it does stop me from telling others that I watch anime. They make us all look bad.
