I don't think I'm breaking any of the rules with this (since I did read them beforehand, but in case I ended up missing something my bad, and now moving on.)
Could you all take your time to watch this for it's 5 1/2 minute duration?
It's especially important if you make videos and/or draw fanart.
The deadline is at 11:59 PM tomorrow.

You have my support.
I'm sure a lot of you out there watch Youtube videos. If you haven't heard or noticed by now companies are taking advantage of the copyright system in order to harm content creators and steal money from them.
I care about this issue and I want to help. This is not an April fools joke. We don't have long to act and content creators need your help. It'd mean a lot to me if you'd take a little bit of time out of your life to look at these 2 videos.

I need you to help spread the word.

It would be nice if you weren't presumed guilty and your material immediately taken down.

Of course it'd also be nice if someone--or many someones--would use the provisions already in the DMCA to punish abusers.

If you watched Doug Walker's video, it explains that the DMCA was from 1998, the internet has changed in almost 20 years, which is why this is necessary right now.
So please don't point fingers at people~. Thank you~~.

Those don't work. That's why things are the way they are. That's why a fix is needed.

Thank you both for signing <3~.

It seems that the deadline has been extended for 45 more days.
For those of you who want to sign it, but didn't know about it, lel.
(I assume we got enough signatures for it to extend??? Or perhaps they realized that giving us literally a deadline of 1~2 days was BS.)

Let's say that you decided to write an ebook. In your ebook you quote lines from your favorite anime. You give the appropriate credit to the writer, as you should. The purpose of your ebook is to analyze those lines and to try to understand what it was the writer might have been thinking when he wrote those lines.

You ebook goes on sale on Amazon for the Kindle ebook reader and becomes number 1 on the New York Book seller list. Then a DMCA is filed against your ebook. Amazon has to stop selling it. Your hard work is gone! Your chance to become a famous writer snatched from your grasp.

When you quoted those lines, and gave proper credit, that is what is called "Fair Use." You have the right to use bits and pieces of someone else' work for whatever purpose you want - as long as you give proper credit (there is a process for giving proper credit). The DMCA is saying that you stole the work of the other writer. However, that is not true.

When you steal the work of another writer, you are not giving credit, and making it seem like it was yours. Or you quote entire chapters, or even the whole book. Even if you give credit, quoting an entire book, and then giving credit is not "Fair Use." It's Copy Right Infringement. That is "stealing someone else' work."

In "Fair Use", you quote only a few lines, give proper credit, and then go on to write the rest of your own ebook about what it is you wanted to talk about those lines.

Now, extend the scenario given above to movie reviewers, electronic game critics, Youtubers who rant about a song someone wrote.... DMCA is being abused to stop everyone's right to "FAIR USE." The petition is demanding that this abuse of the DMCA be stopped with corrective laws and penalties for those abusing DMCA to stop others from fairly using their works.

Maybe the writer, whose lines you quoted didn't like the way you analyzed his work. To stop people from reading your critical review, he abuses DMCA to have your ebook taken down. Maybe someone is using botts to scan the Internet for anything that might contain some of their works, and the bott used DMCA inappropriately to take down your ebook. It wasn't on purpose, but the careless use of the bott damaged your reputation, and caused you to lose potential sales.

DMCA needs to be fixed.

i've been a supporter of WTFU since it came to light, especially after the incident with I Hate Everything, it goes to show that people are abusing it, but companies obviously dont care and are totally willing to allow themselves to be stomped upon by higher corporations, even if in Youtube's case they're owned by fucking Google. ofc if google didn't abide by the ridiculous standards of companies they might lose their sponsorship, but all the same, with the power google has you think they'd do something about the claim system being a custerfucking mess, and maybe tell companies off a bit?

all around it goes to show just how mismanaged YT has become in the past few years though. ever since they introduced content ID i thought things were going to worsen, the fact that the system is almost exclusively automated as supposed to checked properly by a human being, and an unbiased one who isn't being puppeted by a company at that just goes to show how flawed it is even conceptually.
