So I just watched the sub, and I don't think I noticed anything different from the OVA series... and considering that the dub is simultaneously added, it appears to be the case.

Is it going to diverge at some point, or is this just a shill to make more money off the series by releasing it as an anime series with no difference from the original whatsoever? I wouldn't put it past Bandai and Sunrise, but I'm disappointed so far.

There's supposed to be new scenes added. It probably won't be more than a couple minutes of new footage total.

Given a run time of 20 minutes per TV episode after subtracting the OP & ED, there is only enough material in the 7 OVAs (including their own OP & ED) to cover about 22.5 episodes.

Of course, they could always spend a few minutes at the beginning of every episode reviewing what happened in the last episode.

I`m pretty happy that I have a new gundam series to watch! I didn`t watch the OVA so it`s all new to me!!
This new series give me the same feeling that the original gundam give me some years ago so I`m pretty excited for this!
The OST seems gold, tho!

The recent episode was only like 16 minutes though.

Do you mean episode 1 posted here? It shows as 24:03 (including the OP & ED). The OP & ED would need to be very long to cut the content time down to 16 minutes instead of 20.

I've watched most of the series on dvd and I think it does work out better in ova format, still it will be interesting to see if they added any new scenes (none that I noticed here) there are definitely some things that could have been expanded on.

On the whole I have mixed feelings about the show. It has a good supporting cast and laudable values, but I felt like it was hit or miss with regards to execution. I also found Banagher almost unbearable as time went on.

The beginning is definitely one of the strongest parts though, so this episode was great. Kshatriya fight is one of my favorite mech battles.

Dynasty Warriors Gundam 3's inclusion of Banarge, Audrey and Frontal along with the Unicorn and Sinanju has been the extent of my exposure to Gundam: Unicorn.
This is the first time I've had the chance to see even part of the 0096 story, OVA or not, and I'm fine with that. This is the kind of stuff I hoped to find on Crunchy, and it's been worth the wait.
I've had the privilege of watching all the UC shows and OVAs up to Char's Counterattack, and hearing Bright and Londo Bell's names in a Universal Century show feels like coming home again.

As someone who's not very familiar with the Gundam series, can someone explain me what this is? From reading a few post, it seems that this is an OVA, and that the original was released some time ago.

Really enjoying the first two episodes. High quality stuff. The space battles are particularly beautiful. As the main, Banagher is surprisingly capable.

This one requires some prior knowledge of Gundam canon to fully understand to be honest. It doesn't stand up that great by itself.

It was an OVA series where each OVA was an hour or so long. Hence by dividing up the OVA episodes they can stretch it out into 22 minute episodes like this.

But this takes place in the main Gundam canon timeline ( Universal Century ) so this story is built on the history of several prior series. Specifically the original series in the 70s and the follow ups in the 80s and early 90s. Unfortunately this will rear its ugly head more and more the further you get into Gundam Unicorn as focus moves away from Banana Lynx and on to the some odd 3-4 different factions at play.

Much talking about politics and history will ensue. None of which will mean anything to first time viewers.

Agreed, the main characters are little more than dull weight that drifts through the story. Banana Lynx especially is seriously just sort of there the entire show. He has no character arc or anything. He's just....present. Same with most the villains. They're just sort of there, going through the motions.

And don't get me started on the final battle. -.-

Renamed this as the show discussion thread, since discussing is what folks seem to be doing here, even beyond the specifics raised in the opening post, and no-one else has started a thread for it.

I am quite new to Gundam. Aside from just a couple of episodes from one of the very early series (though I don't recall exactly which one), Iron Blooded Orphans was my first, so even though this is basically just a tweaked version of an old OVA, it's new for me and is a good opportunity to watch more, right from the comfort of Crunchyroll.

I liked the first episode, and even with little Gundam knowledge under my belt, I found it easy to follow, though I"m sure there are some things that would have more impact if I had more in my repertoire. But, we'll see how that goes.

Thanks for the info. I'd thought about watching more of Gundam, but it's pretty daunting with all the episodes. I might do a series here and there to start chipping away at it.
